Precision Torque Limiters ?

I have a friend who never uses any type of torque wrench. He just keeps turning until he hears cracking and smells s**t.

I think shooters WAY overuse torque wrenches - very few threaded joints (if any) are critical in a firearm, and even the best torque wrenches are crude instruments. But if you must have one, just use a simple beam type. They're inexpensive and do not give any accuracy up to more expensive designs (and are better than some).

Avoid moly or other EP lubes, as this only makes the torque error band wider.

There are charts for torque REDUCTION that are to be used any time any lubricant is used. These REDUCTIONS are considerable.....some as the ones stated by GrocMax, may be as much as a 60% REDUCTION .
My problem is that I can't recall a torque amount supplied by a manufacturer that states whether any or what type lube was used when they give the torque amount. (ARP being an exception).
It's beyond my nature to run a dry screw or bolt into a dry threaded hole.

If you want an inexspensive completely repeatable but awkward torque wrench one of the springbar types like a Neiko listed in Amazon for 22$ is hard to beat. They are durable, repeatable and should be accurate.
The torque limiting or torque breaking type can become a tad funky at times. I used a couple of spring bar types to check calibration on the limiting types. Sometimes results werent happy.

6 - 8 years ago, there was a solid study, shootout if you will, of torque wrenches. . . . Somewhere.

The fat wrench, as one poster alluded to, was VERY non repeatable, same hole, threads and user.
No, I dont remember where I read it, good chance here. Maybe try the search function?

I do specifically remember the Fat W. being a joke, somewhere +/- 10% or more. Rings, not a problem for me, action screws another story.
