Precision Matthews wait

I upgraded from a Clausing 5913 to PM1236. I love using a lathe... don't like working on a lathe. The Clausing was worn out. The PM is great, but i would like to add an electronic lead screw drive
My clausing was in very nice shape and did nice work, just noisy, and no metric threadding. I searched for that lathe for about 3 years. Most of them are worn out. My Harrison should be a nicer lathe than a PM when its done, but ill have a pretty penny into it.

Just got an email that my mill column should be at their facility in approx 2 weeks, been waiting since last September 2020. But they were transparent about the shipping issues. Just sucks to buy a mill to have a defective column and the machine has basically been sitting unused for almost a year now. Bummer, you would think that they would keep at least a few parts on hand for issues that may come up. I will be buying a new lathe and mill in the next 7-10 years and I dout it will be from them. Even though there QC seems better than other places, at least other places have parts I stock and ready to ship. But he DID order me and new one and paid for shipping soooo I have nothing bad to say about the company other than parts availability. Just the wait time sucks…. Sorry just ranting.

Everything coming from Taiwan is apt to be aggravating due to China mangling up their economy, tie a knot and hang on.

My experience over the past 15 years, has been the importers of taiwan machinery maintain absolutly no spare parts in stock in the US. High end or budget macines, same problem.

I can say from personal experience with Port of Oakland (2nd largest on west coast) they have ships anchored for weeks before they can even offload, then the containers are sitting for even longer until they can either be sent by rail or truck, this is as of last week. Containerized shipping is the single greatest bottleneck in the entire global supply stream currently.

I don't expect it to get better until Q2 2022, if things stay the way they are currently. Another shutdown, then add 6+ months to that.

Car dealerships are hurting as automotive computer chips are in that bottleneck. Part of the "build back better" thingy. Just about everything that should be up is down and everything that should be down is up.

Who knew.

Maybe, maybe not.
Depends on how badly you need a machine- and the nature of your purchase agreement.

Two substantial delays- from an estimated two months to half a year is bullshit, I don't care who the company is. That's not indicative of a minor supply chain glitch- and this isn't a year ago, covid issues still exist but nothing like back then. Something happened/is happening...

I'd demand a cogent explanation- followed up with "How do I know THIS date is going to be honored when you haven't met the last two?"

JMO.
Covid issues are worse this year than they were last year! Once we emptied the wharehouses the fun began!

I bought a Taiwanese lathe in March from another company. Supposedly shipped in April. Still on the water with a projected due date of late June. THEN it will languish in Port of Oakland for a few days (or more!) while it gets unloaded. Seems like a sign of the times.
It's not PM's fault.
Well, I pick it up Monday in Santa Clara, CA. Sat outside the Golden Gate for a month or so then the longshoremen at Port of Oakland took their sweet ass time unloading it, and it got stuck in customs for a while. Starting to get exited again....

Emailed again and it went from the end of August to the end of September and then on to the installation phase according to Lee at PM. At least they're good about returning emails. Hopefully that doesn't drag out again and I assume that they are just giving me the info that they are being given so we'll just hope for the best.

Anyone else getting their order pushed way out? Ordered my PM1340 back in early March and it was supposed to be here in May. Then got pushed back to June. Now they are telling me, because of this, that and the other, my machine is scheduled to be here late August. Problem is that I'm needing that machine more and more but it sounds like I'm kinda stuck. Just wanted to see if anyone else was getting the same answers.
I entertained the thought of buying an imported full size mill for a few seconds until coming to my senses and realizing a Bridgeport would be in my future. Theres a place 50 miles away from me with all the parts ect. I do have imported lathes. The lathe situation is more of a problem. I don’t know what to do about it. Im not selling the old SB that’s for sure.
