Precision Matthews 5C Collet

I think I have that collet closer. Sent the first one back due to excessive run out. Second one is close but I would not use it for brass neck turning. Works great for working on small roundstock where you need to turn a cpl thou off the outside as a minimum. Also is relaively fast for multiple pieces back to back. I made several muzzleloader breach plugs this way.
Probably not a good choice for necks.

I'm not sure I'd trust the runout on a chuck made for 5C, but a lathe designed for a 5C where the 5C adapter rides in the spindle taper is generally accurate to 0.0005 or better when used with good collets (Hardinge or South Bend). I have the factory draw-bar collet closer on my South Bend 13 and it is worth every penny.

Here I'm cutting down 308 cases for Remington Ultimate Muzzle Loader:

Yes the pm 5c collet chuck is adjustable for runout. I own a pm and looked at this chuck. I didn't buy it yet because I didn't think I would use it enough but it does seem nice

I just watched a video Jackie Schmidt posted of turning brass on a lathe. Understanding runout might be a an issue has anyone tried one of these:

Precision Matthews 5-C Collet Chuck

It looks like you could possibly adjust for runout.

Thank you all,
Hank

I've got a Bison 5C set-tru and use it to hold the mandrel for turning cases. Doesn't matter if it's true or not as you turn the sacrificial mandrel to size and after that it's perfectly concentric to spindle. The case holder is held in a ER-40 collet in the tailstock.

If you machine the backplate yourself it will be accurate. You need to mark the backplate and the spindle so that it can be put back the same each time. Also each time you change it you need to clean everything off really good and endeavor to clamp the backplate the same on each cam. I don't think Jackie uses a 5C for turning brass but I could be wrong.

I think his old video was using a 3 jaw chuck. I use a 5C or ER-40 chuck to hold the sacrificial mandrel, just so I don't knock a knuckle off with a 3 or 4 jaw. Also to hold a 4 flute carbide end mill to trim cases. I've got a 1uM read head on tailstock, so easy to trim to +/- .0001"
