precision grouping from RRA w/ 24" bbl.

In my readings here I acquired a new term "precision, rather than accuracy" So, with the thought of an entry 600 yd. F/TR rifle, what should be my precision or accuracy expectations from a factory RRA 223 with their heavy 24" Bbl. ??
I would like thoughts & openions from thoses that actually have RRA 's with the 20 or 24" heavy barrels

not knowing your capability, I would guess with good hand loading procedures, 10 shot groups around 1 MOA

With my Savage 110 with a factory 26" 223 bbl. in a Choate stock I can keep 5 69 SMK's & Nosler CC's inside an inch at 200 yds.

well, the only way to test the precision is to find a good handload for it and take it out to a match. take your savage as a back up rifle in case it does not perform as desired. get yourself some 80 grain bergers and lake city or lapua brass. try several different powders.

I had a 24" RRA varmint upper until I loaned it to my brother and he traded it for a boat. I know, that is pretty messed up. When I had the rifle it was a very consistent sub 1/2 moa shooter with 52gr match kings. Mine was the 1-12 twist because that was all they made for the 24" upper back then. It was a nightmare on the Nutra Rats down in Florida.

Thank you for your info, most of my stash of 224's are 69 gn and above So I'd probably go with their 1-8 even though my range is limited to 300 yds. And as far as an entry into F/TR I'm leaning on a long bbl.in 308 for the Savage.

I agree that the 1-8 twist would be a better fit for your purposes. I was always amazed that it was as accurate as it was. It would even shoot that cheap PMC ammo into a half inch and it was about $3 a box back then.
As far as the boat goes, he sold it before I ever even got to see it on the water. He's one of those people that if you loan them something, they assume that if you don't ask for it back within a week, you must not have wanted it anymore. As they say, you can choose your friends, but your family is chosen for you.

I have a Stag set up with their heavy 24" barrel in SS. Some think the Rock River is better. Mine shoots as well or better than my Remmy 700 and Savage 110V, most days. It really surprised me. Definitely get the tighter twist if you can. I did the loads for mine with 50 grain Hornady SP and BL-c2, cause I had a bunch of it. Started at 23 grains and moved up in .3 grain increments to 26.7, which is max in my Hornady book. I can't find the target, right now, but I remember it well. The groups shrank from 1.5 in. to 1/2 in. As I moved up in powder weight. Mine likes the hotter loads, it seems. Those were mag length, at 100 yds. Kinda changed my perspective about what an "AR " can do.. I got it cause my kids like the black guns. Next summer I plan to try some more temp stable powders, wth heavier bullets. I only compete against myself. Hey Newguy : i have a brother like yours and know how you feel. He whined and complained when my father passed and I got all his guns. I felt guilty and gave him the old Sako, in .222., cause he used to shoot ground hogs with my Dad with it, and , as he said" it had sentimental value". The Local Gun Store was selling it, a week later.

Get it to shoot the 70gr Berger VLD, or the +80gr bullets, and you should be all set for 600y.

In a 0 wind condition you should be under 6" groups at that distance. Add wind and well...

1MPH in wind will move the bullet ~1/2MOA, or ~2.5-3.5" at 600y.
