Pre64 vs new Winchester Model 70 build

If you’re building a rifle for YOU, get the action that makes the most sense to you. For a custom, it doesn’t make a nickel’s sort of difference whether you start with a new or pre-64. MY preference is for the pre but that’s what I sort of grew up around. I also prefer the 70 safety and trigger. For the latter, if you set them right there isn’t a better hunting trigger. Both of these actions may require some tinkering to get right but it will be minimal.

I grew up reading Jack O'Connor so I know were you are coming from. You have been given some really good options on actions to use instead of pre-64 (I think better) Sounds like you want agreement on your decision to use pre-64. Your money use the action you want.

I believe David Miller uses (used) current production Model 70 CRF actions (worked over) on his Marksman model.

I have several Beretta Mato rifles with an action that duplicates the Dakota 97 action for a lot less money, you might want to consider it.

I also like pre-64 Model 70 actions a lot!! When I was in high school I used a Pre-war carbine in .270 Winchester for consecutive year hunts in Wyoming, still have it.
There is just something about the feel and sound of that action that sticks with you!!

Thanks for all the posts! They all help with my decision. I’m still leaning towards the pre-64 action. I really like the simplicity of the trigger. And yes, Jack O’Connor is a big influence. Not sure where 7x57 influence comes from.

shortly after the turn of the last century the Brits decided to de-metric (is that a word?) several of the European cartridges. This 7x57 is probably the best, they call it the .275 Rigby. And, yes, you can buy Hornady head stamped brass for it. I am having one built on a fully engraved GEWEHR DST action this coming year.

At the risk of sounding like a smartass, which is not my intent, just get the stuff you need and build it the way you want it. When you ask for advice in the shooting community, you will receive plenty. All of it well meaning, and most of it valuable and useful. But if you want something specific, do it once, do it right, and you will never regret it. There is such a thing as information overload

If I was spending your money for you I would get Reto Buehler to build it on a GMA.

Drop port, I've visited with Reto quite a bit. He is very very good, but I don't think he would do it for less than $12,500 on the low end with you furnishing the receiver and hardware.

I have 3 real nice ones. They have one component in common with an 03. Look at the beautiful custom mauser copies above like butch referenced- im wanting a springfield copy like that

Reto's is not a clone. He does very very high quality work. I believe if you supply the metal and hardware his prices start at about $12,500 and can reach much much higher.
