Pre Internet old Gun Guys

BTW can anyone tell me how to change my user name on this forum to T-REX? I think that would be appropriate.

Us old guys are slow but we eventually get there. The name of my M14 that I Legged out with is T-REX, antique gun and antique shooter so I thought that would be a more appropriate name since for some reason you folks do not use your real names on the forum. Anyway I am new to the forum so maybe I can be the curmudgeon at large.

My first new gun was a Remington was a 721 -300 -HH. Alvin who had the service station said he hadn't ordered it he was going to send it back. When I told my mother she told me if I want a gun I would have to make enough money to buy one. I picked up potatoes for .03 cents a bushel Top Onions .10 cents. Mom worked at the phone company where she plug in the lines on a switch board. She made .69 cents a hour. By hunting season I had made enough to pay for one. I went mom and ask Alvin if he could order me one. When he said NO not by hunting season My heart Stop.
He smiled and ask if this one would work. It has a TT serial number . It will be 58 years we have hunted together. Larry

I use my real name.

I had the misfortune of growing up a gun crazy kid yet residing in Central New Jersey. By the time I was old enough to actually buy my own firearms at 18 yoa the GCA of 1968 was enacted that same year. Luckily a HS Buddy had a pretty good grasp on reloading, casting and pistol shooting he taught me a lot. His Dad was a very competent Machinist and he was a lot of help as well.
I can recall hitting a few gun shows just across the border in PA. PA was like another world compared to restrictive NJ. At the shows there were the most amazing rifles and handguns. wish I could go back NOW and snag a few of the old Smith & Wesson Registered Magnums or a few gold box Smiths before they even started with Model numbers. Always recall the Ag Hall show in Easton and an old guy with a couple of Holland & Holland double rifles.
The 500 Nitro was $550. Lots of bargains back then but never had the money.
