Pre-64 M70 Questions

Two weeks ago I got $1600.00 for a 1957 year in 270Win. I should have asked for more...the buyer was very happy to get it. it was not unfired, but it was unaltered.
A post-war in 270 for $1600 was a reasonable price if it had minimal wear. In the 2015 Blue Book a 100% mint 270 rated exactly $1600, I'm sure prices have inched, but not jumped, upwards in three years.

Thanks for the thoughts and suggestions. The safety now works, headspace at the maximum. His borescope died so we could only look down the barrel with our eyes. The crown looks fine, but he did not recrown it. I wanted to get an idea if the barrel was still accurate. I finally got the copper out so off to the range.
I fired a box of LC Match ammo indoors at 100 yds. Two or three shots together with a flyer . Handloads did about the same. The flyer did not go in the same direction. The location of the group did not change. The shots that were close together were about .5, opening up to about 2.0 with the flyer. The flyer occurred randomly from the second to the forth shot.
I measured the COL to touch the lands. About .31 inch jump (not a typo), even with 200gr Sierra Matchkings. In order to touch the lands, the bullet would not even seat in the case.
After 30 rounds, the barrel is heavily coppered. I appreciate the barrel trying to return some of the copper that I sent down range, but I have yet to figure out a way to reclaim it. I can not feel any obvious rough spots in the barrel as the patch goes thru it.

A few questions:
Are there any bullets, either target or hunting that generally like that much jump (.31 inches)?
Were any of these old target barrels chambered with that much freebore?
Dad engraved his driver's license number on the side of the receiver. Would this effect the value?? I now have a number of different rifles that have his DL number on them He did it to prevent theft. Had I known what he was doing, I would have destroyed the engraving pen even though I was only 10 at the time. At least the serial number was not altered.

Unless your suggestions give me hope, I plan to rebarrel and restock it. I can keep the old barrel and stock (modified with a Freeland adjustable butt) in case a collector wants them. The action belonged to my father so I will keep it.

Thanks again for your thoughts and suggestions. Back to the copper mine for me.

Most of the older design bullets like Sierra Pro Hunters and Sierra Game Kings will jump a great distance and still shoot well. Load it up with some 165gr SGKs and see how it shoots, and for middle distances on targets you can use the 168SMK and get pretty much the same POI. You might try the 190SMK for a target bullet. They were a popular 15 or 20 yrs ago in the -06 and the 300WM

"Dad engraved his driver's license number on the side of the receiver. Would this effect the value?? "

By 30% at minimum.
Don't feel too bad. Worse things have happened, I inherited a Union Switch and Signal 1911 slide that has been cut for Bomar target sights. Was done by a bullyseye shooter fried of mine in the early 50's.

Both you rifle and the US&S slide can be reclaimed but not for small dollars unless you can do the work yourself.
