Custom action based on pre-64 M70 action

I have a new Defiance action that has a 3 position safety, claw extractor, and mechanical ejector.

I guess I’m the dummy…. I like the m70 action for a hunting rifle. Why no custom#? Well, Winchester/fn do it pretty well. There is a lot of machining in one. You quickly go from making it more precise to something akin to the GMA action which is pretty expensive for most folks.

I forget who now, but someone is doing cnc truing….

Why disparage MRC? They have struggled to get their drawing built….probably due to the cost/profit balance being too tight.

I cant imagine anybody making a custom pre64 M70, but if you was to want something similar you can get a montana. I built on one one time. Had the same finish and similar tolerances.
Dusty, I've had a couple. They were kit actions in my opinion and mine needed a lot of tender care.

They struggled and went tits up.

I have a couple of the South Carolina made CRF M70's that are darn fine hunting rifles. Should be able to find one to sacrifice. I inherited a pre 64 from my dad that he had built around 1980 in 280 Rem. The barrel was shot so I put a Brux on it in 280AI for my wife's western rifle. I like it so much I am selling my 300 Win and having the same thing built for me.

There's nothing wrong with a Winchester. I've done a bunch and all were very fine hunting rifles. They're more trouble and most people want to stay in their comfort zone. The only thing I'd like to see different is a larger tenon od. Can't think of a thing else, crf or not. They're on par or better than most factory actions. Montana had some issues but I bought about a dozen of their actions several years back and all were fine. The 700 design is cheaper and easier but that doesn't affect Winchesters. Ford vs Chevy. Easier isn't really the right word to describe Reminton. Round is a better word to describe the difference.

A "new" M70 CRF action? Kimber Model 84M and M8400 are almost true M70 copies, the 84M being a scaled-down version for the small bolt face. A sweet "mini M70" if you will. Three position safety, CRF, rotating claw extractor, all the attributes of the original, which I have a few and cherish.

My Kimber 84M Varmint in 204R is as accurate as need be for distant sage rats or rock chucks, always in the .4 MOA range or less with my handloads. I still hunt with my old M70 in .270 for mulies, and my .338-06 Ackley for elk. No complaints, no failures.

Some of the Pre 64's I had showed very poor machining and run out,

The last CF Model 70 I had was turned into a 6 Rem AI, with a McMillen Marksman stock, jewel trigger, brother it was a shooter! 80g Sierra bltiz bt at 3800 shot bug holes with R#19!

Im a brno/cz man when it comes to crf on a hunting rifle. ARC has it down pretty good in the mausingfield
Dusty, this is my 375 H&H. A new CZ550 receiver, AHR 3 pos safety, and a AHR single stage trigger. Bell&Carlson stock with a Shilen barrel chambered by Mike Bryant.

A Remington or Remington footprint rifle is best in my opinion for a non dangerous game hunting rifle. All accessories in the World are out there for them.
