ha ha bet you had a top time Sundance,i would to,i used to shoot in a land fill site years ago before health and safety went silly and spoilt it all,that was with a rifle and shot gun but we had good days on the vermin on that ground.

1200 rds a day???

Been out West many times to hunt them. One year I literally never even got off a single shot.

It's hard to find places to hunt. Then it's hard to even find the darn things at times. Lately I have gone to Wyoming and hunted public land using BLM maps. I get lost. Never figure out how to set up with a safe backstop but do get some shots. "Some" means maybe 100 a day but mostly less.

It's still fun and a bit of an adventure so we are planning another trip again this year. If I take 1,000 rds for both my wife and I we will probably bring half of it back or more and still call it fun.

yep it still sounds good with 100 shots fired if you ask me,just one last question,whats your hit score when you fire say 100 shots do you get 90 plus or hit a lot less,i suppose in reality the greater the distance the less you will hit.cheers simon

Simon, the above notes are based on individual experience, some wildly high and some more "
normal" from my experience. I have shot pd in TX, Wy, NE, SD, Co, and two things are consistent.

Weather is a factor, if it is too hot they go down late morning and come up in the early evening,
rain and heavy cold, they stay down, come up only when necessary to eat, come up active after it clears

towns vary greatly, I have seen them 100 acrea and 1 mile by 600 yds., I have also seen them empty as the plague and property owners poison them as cows, horses break legs stepping in the holes at night.

as a rule, a "live town' 200-300 yds by 1/2 mile will give 200-500 shots a day depending on the weather, and health of the pd,.

22lr, 221, 222, 223 22-250, 243, 22br, 6br + all are great

try using Google earth, look in the western states from low altitude and you will see dog town as white dots scattered over an area. example try 41'58' N by 108' 18'W look for dots zoom to 6000ft.

Looking at taking a trip to North Dakota/Southern Alberta this season... From what I've read these seem to be pretty good bets as far as PD shooting goes... In Alberta they're called gophers or "Richardson Ground Squirrels".

'Have a .223, .243., .17HMR and a .22lr... Maybe now have an excuse to get a .22-250 ;-)

There ARE "Richardson Ground Squirrels", but that is a different animal than the Prairie Dog.

The ground squirrels are about 1/2 the size of Prairie Dogs.

I'm going to be in Raton New Mexico for the first week of August this year... 'Shooting the RM3G at the NRA Whittington Center.
'Should look into arranging a PD day while I'm down there...
Hopefully there are some areas I can access within reasonable distance...
