Prairie doggin in Kansas this time of year?

Hey all! This is probably a stupid question but, is the prairie dog shootin in Kansas any good this time of year? Here pretty quick I have to run a friend down to Kansas City, Kansas to pick up a truck he purchased online and while down there I figured I would poke around and shoot some prairie dogs. I'm from Michigan and have never been prairie dog hunting before. I'm not looking to get any really good shooting but, I wanted to try my hand at it if there were any prairie dogs out this time of year. Is all the prairie dog hunting through guide services or do they have BLM land down there to shoot on.

Just thought it would be a good opportunity to try prairie dog hunting since I was going to be down there! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Mike

Check this site out.Western Kansas is probably the best bet.

I don't know about them being out this time of year, but to my knowledge, there are no p dogs anywhere close to Kansas City. I live 100 miles north of there and if you do happen to find some down there I would appreciate it if you would let me know. Jason

Thanks Jason! I plan on driving to the west side of the state to do some shooting. The guides over that way "claim" year round shooting. I'm gonna call some of them and find out. I see your user name and assume you shoot a Savage, so do I but not as fancy of one. I shoot a VLP in .22/250 and love it!

Thanks, Mike

In Utah...they semi-hibernate Nov-Feb

Come out on sunny days.......

12" of snow where I shoot 'em now......

Mike,
AFAIK, there's no such thing as BLM land in Western Kansas, and I've lived here my entire life. We've been having a pretty wet & cold late fall/early winter, so the ground's fairly saturated. Land owners would certainly discourage anyone driving around looking for dogs to pot in these conditions. I have my own 1000yd. range in one of our pastures, and can't even get over there to use it right now without leaving muddy ruts. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I'd encourage you to come back next spring.

Yep I have a couple of savages. I really like the LRPV and it is in 22-250 as well. I wish I would have gotten the faster twist barrel when I bought it but I didn't. It shoots 50 Vmax through the same hole on most occasions and was the first gun I ever had that would shoot one hole groups. I had always been a Remington guy before, but I am being swayed to the other side more and more. At least for an out of the box factory gun. Friends of mine have coopers and Kimbers and some custom barrel 700's and the LRPV will beat them almost every day.

Hey VLRP,
I live 30 miles west of KC in a very rural area. There are no Pdogs anywhere close. You can start to get into them in middle Kansas. I drive way west to shoot them myself.
Also a fan of the savage... Own 5 actions and 9 barrels... easy to change so I do. Bill

Yes. prairiedogs do come out this time of the year if it is sunny. The weather has to be nicer. There will not be as many out and they may be more spooky. Prairie dogs rarely come out on a cloudy day, winter or summer. I was out in western KS last August for 3 days and only got to shoot a little the last evening due to clouds. But you go when you can. Went out several years ago in early April, a trip we had planned for a month or so and so caught in a late snow storm. Which followed heavy rains. No hunting that weeked either. Max

Max, I see you posting your info on multiple threads. What part of Logan County are you talking about? PM me if you like.

Nevermind, I got off my lazy ass and looked you up. Just by your location I'd guess you probably have plenty of those critters to shoot at.
