Looking for some first hand knowledge , Thinking of getting an upper in 7.62x39 Does it really work well or does it just work but shouldn't be

Thank you in advance

I have one, a Colt with detachable carry handle, I think. Been quite awhile since I played with it.

Works OK, and it outshot my SKS and AK, but nothing like a 223. Steel case ball was junk. White box Winchester was a fair bit better. Tried handloads with Sierra 125's and it didn't seem to make much difference.

Searching the other day, pulled a 50 cal ammo can out from under the bench, weighed a ton. Ball, brass case, made by Lapua. Beautiful stuff.

Had a crazy thought of getting a good 308 blank and making a barrel. But ... why?

Had one with factory Colt Upper. Accuracy was pretty good, but there were feeding and extraction issues. I tried a half-dozen different mags including factory Colt 7.62x39 mag, and a third party AR Mag amalgamated with an AK magazine lower section.

Honestly after fiddling around for quite some time I just got rid of it. It’s not worth the time and effort. Just get a good AK 7.62x39 clone — it will run flawlessly.

I strongly recommend you do NOT waste time on any 7.62x39 AR upper system.
