Practical competitions: rifle requirements

Hi,

I've been shooting for almost 20 years and would like to start competitive shooting. I own an Accuracy International AT 308, 20" barrel with a 1:12 twist capable of 1/2 MOA when I do my job as a shooter. I am well aware that 308 is not the best caliber to compete in practical competitions but that's what I own at the moment and until I can muster the cash to buy another barrel, 308 will have to do if only to get some experience in the practical competitions.

My question: Are there regulations that would prevent me from competing with a 20" barrel? I can<t seem to find any but just need to confirm.

no regulations, you'll fit right in!

308 is a good caliber to get started in precision type matches. Cheap to shoot, tons of reload info, factory rounds if you don't reload, .... Then when you go to a 6mm or 6.5mm cartridge, it'll feel like cheating. And 1/2 moa is plenty good. Most of the shooting is non-prone, so a .1 moa rifle is no good if you can't hold a 4 moa target. Best advice I can give you is watch some videos on Youtube to see what the stages and shooting positions look like, then practice them. Also, check out Snipershide.com, it is more geared towards what you want to do. Tons of local matches and training across the country posted daily.

FTRinPA, thank you. I have been checking many videos and have been practicing different shooting stances and I really enjoy the challenges it offers. I'll hop on Sniper's Hide and give it a look. Thx for the info.
