Powders for 7mm Mag

Trying to work up a accuracy load for my Rem, 700, 7mm mag.

So far have tried H4350 and H1000 powders and bullet weights but my last load using H1000 seemed to be the best with 160gr Speer bullets.

One thing I noticed between the 2 powders is that the H1000 really has high recoil. I know it's a slower burning powder but man my shoulder hurts after 10 rounds of the H1000.

I could easily shoot 20 - 30 rounds of H4350 before my shoulder would start to hurt.

Does a slower burning powder have bigger recoil. ?

68-69gr of H1000 usually provides a good node right around 2950-3000 fps with the 160 class bullets. I've never tried the Speer but this load works well with the 168 Bergers and 160 TMKs. If H1000 doesn't give you what you are looking for 70-72gr of Retumbo has also worked well for me. Magnum cartridges and hurt shoulders go hand in hand, unfortunately. A good brake will tame that thing right down for you.

A slower burning powder would not intrinsically have 'bigger' recoil but if you load it to higher velocity and/or a heavier bullet, it would.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The harder you launch a bullet, the more recoil there will be.

In the same rifle, same cartridge;

Heavier bullet = more recoil
Faster MV = more recoil

Here is a link to a recoil calculator. http://www.jbmballistics.com/cgi-bin/jbmrecoil-5.1.cgi

Change the input parameters and see what happens.

A slower powder for the same bullet and MV will have a slower recoil velocity. Same force but not as sharp. More like a push than a punch.

I have great success in my 7mm remmy with RL22 and N560. Both great, esp. with heavies and solids like barnes bullets.

like Gb300wm, i run RL22 and Barnes TTSX 150's....just took my old Browning A-Bolt SS out 2 weeks ago after almost 2-3 years of hiding in the safe, mounted an inexpensive Simmons scope, and at 100yds shot a 1 hole cloverleaf, and at 200 a 1.089 ctc group.....in the past, have used Norma MRP, but it was hard to find...so switched to the RL22....Plus i use it in my 6.5x284 for the most accurate load....just my experience. rsbhunter

I use surplus WC870 (Hodgdon 870) with heavier bullets in my 7mm Rem mag. Yes, there's lot-to-lot variation, but it is inexpensive (check www.gibrass.com) and slow enough that one will find it difficult to get enough in the case to get in trouble. Perfectly acceptable accuracy and very good velocity. Meters well, too.

I've had the best success with H-1000 with the 7 mag and 150's and up. It has been a few years since I have worked with a new 7, so some of the new powders may work well also.

Runner up is a tie between RL 22 and RL 25.

It's almost funny how that was my first ever centerfire big game cartridge, and after going between 6XC, 6.5 creedmoor, 300 Rum, etc, I wonder if the 7Mag isn't STILL one of my favorites. If I had put the money into a built 7Mag that I have into some of the others, I might be a one rifle hunter...? Just glad it has it's place among the great, classic cartridges.....need to shoot it more often..rsbhunter

RL-16 for 120 grainers.
H-4831/H-4831sc would be my first choice for 140 to 175 grainers.
RL-33 would work nicely with 180 grainers.

I never tried RL-26 but I assume it would work good with 140 to 180 grainers in the 7mm RemMag.

RE25 is another very fine choice in the 7mag with 150’s on up.
It has no where near the temp sensitivity as posted by many on line, it is no where near as sensitive as RE22.
If you can get a supply of RE26, but not RE25, then I would give it a whirl, but remember RE26 is FASTER than RE25. I doubt you could stuff enough RE25 into a 7mag to run into trouble with 160’s.

Cheers.
