Powder Trickler???

Hey guys, I'm looking for a powder trickler that can dispense one kernel at a time, if there is one.

Im using an RCBS aluminum one which works ok to get close, but I like to use a tooth pick and drag one kernel at a time until my scale clicks over to the next tenth of a grain. Which I feel I am being pretty accurate, its just slow and boring and was currious if there was anything to speed the process up some. Thanks everyone.

I can NOT get that omega to work right at all. I've adjusted the weight up and down that thing and can not get that thing to even fill a pistol charge worth of powder.

It'll hum along and slowly trinkle a kernal here and there. I can see the kernals bouncing around.. but they are horribly reluctant to actually hit the pan.

The Omega is the one to buy. I love mine.

If I hold either button down continuously I get the behavior you describe. What I do is tap-tap-tap on the button to get it to feed. After loading the hopper I tap-tap-tap the 2 button until there is a continuous stream of powder in the tube all the way to the tip. Then I tap-tap-tap the 1 button to trickle single kernels of powder. At that point holding the 1 button continuously works too.
 
I use a Redding, not that it probably matters, and I only fill it with powder about half way up the feed tube. That way it only picks up a little powder at a time and usually I can get it to dispense one kernel at a time. You have to coax it along like a reluctant date at times, but it works for me. I too have a tooth pick like tool for the times I get a clump of powder in the tube.

The other technique I use is instead of turning the tube I gently tap it, which usually causes only one or two kernels to fall at a time.

Try putting a shim or two under the back two legs, a cereal box top or two should work and then what nhm16 said is also good advice, each powder is a little different but once you learn how to use it it is a real joy, I use a tuned balance scale and a video cam in conjunction with the Omega and it is the best setup I have ever had and I have used a lot of different setups.

I bought an Omega too early this year, like it a lot.

With stick powders it took a little fiddling with to get consistent results. Moving the weight helped some but I finally cut the aluminum tube off by about an inch, de-burred the cut end inside and out, and added a piece of brass tubing ahead of the sliding weight thing. Now it works better than before; the 'fast' button takes awhile to get the tube filled but then works as my main feed control. The other one needs to be tapped rapidly to get individual grains to exit the lip otherwise they just dance in place.

With my Harrell's thrower set to .1 - .2 under I can weigh out charges on my Denver Instruments 123 scale in about 10 - 12 seconds now nice & smooth.

Since an Omega works by vibration, I think of it a little like a rifle barrel: each one needs a bit of tuning to work consistently.
 
I use a plastic spoon. Hold it in one hand, tap that hand with the index finger of the other hand.

That might just be it. The powder may be fighting a slight uphill incline.

There not sold here in the USA there only marketed in the UK for now, a few have slipped into the US but there not sold here.

I use a discontinued electric trckler from Midway and when I need just a granule of powder I lightly tap the trickler tube and out pops a single granule. Before I switched to the electric I did the same with my RCBS that I had poured lead intothe hollow bottom to aid in stability.

The Omega is the fastest and easiest and most accurate trickler available.....once you spend a few minutes getting it tuned right.

One trick is to only fill it about 1/3 rd of the way with powder if your not getting enough vibration since that extra weight changes the tune just like your rifle's barrel. As does the little tuner thingy on the tube try it in or out depending as it changes the vibration too just like a rifle tuner. Use very fast taps to drop single kernels and longer taps for more.
Once you try one your not going back to a manual trickler.
 
Get a small clear straw (I got mine from Panda Express - just the right size) and cut it off at about 4"

Insert the straw into the end of the tricker tube of your RCBS (it should be just snug enough to hold on, not tight).
Make a mark so that you know when the hole in the hopper is pointing up.

Now, fill the hopper half full and give the knob a few twists until the straw has some powder in it. Turn the knob until the hole inside the hopper is pointing up (this allows gravity to help you)

Give the knob a light, rapid tap with one finger and watch the powder slowly tumble out he end of the straw. If it won't drop single kernels, adjust the angle of the straw slightly. You should have the kernels lined up in a conga line for the last inch or so of the straw.

All in all, I'm able to produce single kernels of Varget, H4895, IMR 4064 at will. The total cost was zero (already had the RCBS).
If your scale is too tall, just put the trickler on top of a bullet box next to the scale (I use a half full box of Berger 30 cals)

DO NOT PLACE THE TRICKLER ON TOP OF THE SCALE!
