Powder substitute for IMR 4064???

Before settling on IMR4064 for 168gr SMK in 308, I did some testing on N-140. FWIW, from my files: 43.5gr powder, 5 shot tests, MagnetoSpeed:

N140: 2715fps, ES=16, SD=8
IMR4064: 2712fps, ES=not recorded, SD=12

Several tests on both powders @43.5gr are recorded there - all are in the same ballpark. I like both powders, and in other calibers/weights if one works well for me the other will work too. I use the N-140 in 167gr Scenars so there's no language barrier :)

I guess weve forgotten about AA2520. I use it with 175gr and get outstanding accuracy @ 300 meters. Clean burn as well. H380 is a bit slower but its a real sleeper in the 308. Of the two H380 is quite available, 2520 I dont know. You may have to dig around to find loads for these but they are in print.

I agree. I like the H380 for .308 168 and 175.

When I couldn't get IMR 4064, I tried AA 4064. It works very well . . . perhaps 0.5 grain slower than IMR 4064 in my 6mm Rem. but just as accurate.

Once I tried it, I bought several pounds of it.

I am surprised nobody has suggested Reloder(R) 15 as sub for IMR 4064.
Also from our line, AR-Comp(TM) is a slightly faster burning, but great substitute in 308Win. AR-Comp is closer to the 4895's in terms of burn speed, but delivers outstanding temperature stability. Give it a try, if you have not already.
Shoot well,
Paul

Just where do you get RL15???? I'd buy at least 16 lbs for a reasonable price.

It seems to be coming back around now. I picked up 10lbs (not sure why the RL powders are 5lb jugs instead of 8lb) not too long ago from Wideners and Bruno's had it in stock recently as well.

I have also used Accurate 4064. Charges turned out a little different than IMR 4064, accuracy was similar. It is a shorter cut powder and metered much better however.

I have "heard" that AA4064 and IMR 4320 are basically clones, and IMR 4064 is a little bit slower.

Another great Alliant powder is 2000-MR. Very clean burning, excellent velocity, meters great, and is less temp sensitive than many other ball powders. RL-15 is another good choice.

Lots of shooters in Fclass have tried Rl 17 in 284 but not using it any more IT SPIKES IN HEAT CAN BLOW PRIMERS
I have never seen anyone use IMR 4064 in 284.

In 308 win I have seen it spike using RL 15 for me you can not use double base powders on hot days.

For your 284 wi H 4831sc is the powder hands down
for your .308 win Varget or H 4895 is the powder hands down
