Powder residue on case body

Was wondering why I was getting powder residue on the body's of some of my cases when fired???? I am annealing every firing. Its not happening on all of my cases just some, maybe 4 out of 25 or so. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks Shive

What cartridge, and what is your load?

Lots of possible reasons that might take a book. First thing that comes to mind is it's normal. Then you get into the sizing of the case compared to the size of the chamber and throat. Dimensional differences there can allow blow-back before case sealing.

Type of powder is also an issue. Varget is the absolute worst with Reloader 17 close behind. They are flat out dirty and deposit carbon on everything around their burning.

You can polish it off with abrasives or C-4 carbon cleaner or whatever. I gave up with my Dasher cases and they now wear a permanent badge of experience through all the tumbling, cleaning and shooting they do.

My solution was to give up.

My cartridge is 300wsm, load is 61.3 gr of h4350. Norma brass. Just started after a few firings. Still shooting good, just worried they arent sealing on the neck like they should be. Powder residue down around the case body on a few rounds???

I bet if you anneal It will go away. The WSM case is pretty thick and I bet it takes a lot to move it. It is a no turn neck and are you turning brass? Matt

I shoot a lot of WSM but I anneal. Powder down the case is not normal. My chamber seals off. Usually the cause is the chamber not sealing caused by too hard of brass. I don't like when it does this because you are probably loosing accuracy and you now getting carbon in the chamber. Matt

I think this only applies to a tight chamber. You get carbon on the neck in a factory chamber.

What bullet?

Depending on the bullet, 61.3 may be too light.

I had the same problem with my Sako 6PPC factory chamber rifle, gas blowing down the neck, shoulder and all the way down the case. Tried everything and the only thing that worked was new brass, so then I started to anneal my cases after every two firings and the problem went away. Not saying this is your problem but this is what solved my problem.

Is it possible that your state of anneal is leaving some brass so soft that the bullet can clear the neck with primer push alone before it has expanded to seal? Way back when I had a l-o-n-g throat .308 W to shoot 210 SMKs, I occasionally shot .200 SMKs. I still had .120" jump with the latter when I had only .030" of the bullet's body seated & those buggers sooted up way down the shoulder.

I shoot a lot of Varget and so does most everybody shooting a dasher at Williamsport. I don't think it is that bad. You have to get the pressure up to burn better. He is using H4350 like most target Shooters use in a 300 WSM. Matt

Hi all, everytime I have come across sooty bodies it has been caused by low powder charges.
In my 25 WSM, not only did I get sooted cases all the way to the head, but on some powders and start loads, I got a dent just under the shoulder/body juncture. This was most definitely caused by very poor ignition of the powder charge.
This may be your problem, but not knowing the min/max loads for your rifle, it's only speculation.

You were asked what was your load but you didn't give your bullet weight. I'm looking at a Speer manual for their 180 grain bullets and your a smidgen above the starting load.

What bullet and weight are you using? Until this is known everything is just a wild arss guess.

He is a 1000 yard match shooter so I believe he is shooting 210 Bergers like must people use. Almost everybody in I000 yard Benchrest uses 210 Bergers and H4350. His load is about right depending on twist and barrel. Matt
