Powder Purchase - Weight(s)

Dans40X

Welder
I'd hate to break the bad news-
BUT
Have you checked the weight(s) of your current powder purchases?
1Lb,2Lb,5Lb & 8Lb containers

The weight of the container is included in the equation.

A 1Lb black HDPE plastic container w/plastic lid/cap weighs 2 ounces!

I would be curious to know the Brand you are referring to. I just weighted a jug of N-133, it weighted 8 lbs 7ozs. I also weighted a jug of LT30, it weighted 8 lbs 5ozs. Both of these were purchased within the last month.

Dan40X,

Check your container for the words "net" or "gross". You've got a beef if the word "net" is used and the contents don't weigh that amount. If something is sold by weight, one of those two words has to be used for a legally accurate description of the contents.

I am curious about the brand also. I have only 1# containers. IMR, Hodgdons, and Accurate. All are clearly marked "NET WEIGHT 1 pound."
All are unopened. (12 containers) ALL weigh MORE than 1#, which is correct.
Net= weight of product
Tare=weight of container
Gross=the total of the above.

There is a mass of regs regarding weight labeling of everything and I'd be very much surprised to find this as being incorrect.

The powder(s) in question were recently purchased by a young man that I taught reloading to several years ago.
I'm aware of the CFR/DOT markings on product packaging.

These powders clearly have 14 ounces of Net 1Lb 454g weight.

So,we checked several other 1 Lb containers bottled by the same company.
Bingo
AA#2,AA#5,AA#7,AA#9,AA2015,AA2230,AA2460,AA2520 & all were shy the weight of their perspective containers.

All of the 1,2,5,8 &20Lb containers of Dupont IMR(steel can),Alliant,Hercules,Olin & VV powders weigh up correctly.

Hodgdon &/or Ramshot Powders-I can't attest to their packaging accuracy, since I don't/won't shoot their product(s)

I sent an email to Accurate and gave them the link to the site.
I am not doubting what you say "Dans40X" and I am sure you ARE aware of all labeling. I am NOT looking for an argument at all but selling 14oz for 16oz is surely an enormous discrepancy.
They responded to my email with the following in under 15 minutes:

"Chuck, I just read what the guy posted. No, we send a pound of powder in a pound canister and each pour is checked by a person who guarantees the content weight. Same with all of the stated weights of powders we sell."

It’s no problem at all. It is kind of a disturbing allegation. We don’t mark our powders with AA, not since we purchased Accurate in 2004, maybe he has old stuff, I’m just guessing, but I doubt the original company failed to provide a pound of powder in a pound canister, either. We are a very small company and put a lot of stock in our promises.

Take care, and thanks for asking,

Rob

Bought a new 5-lb jugs of RL-15 recently (Lot# 55043x 08/25/15) that weights 85.2oz (5lbs, 5.2oz) total.
Don't want to break seals or poor out others, how much does Alliant's plastic jug & lid weigh?

I want to think it's around 5 or 5.5 oz
