Powder Measure-Harrell

Is the Harrell Culver powder measure one of the best for dropping powder or are some of the less costly units just as accurate.

The reason that so many use more expensive measures is because there are other considerations. The Harrells measure has a built in clamp, takes a variety of clear drop tubes, and threaded powder bottles. It has a system of adjustment that is very repeatable, and convenient. Some models feature needle/roller bearings which allow very close clearances and a consistency of feel that contribute to charge weight consistency.

Pretty much all ball powders and the finer stick powders may be thrown to close enough charge uniformity. Coarser stick powders need to be thrown and trickled. When you compare the accuracy of measures it is the finer stick powders that should be used to make the comparison, and I can tell you that most shooters have not taken the time to get the best performance from whatever measure they use. This clouds the issue of comparison, because the person reporting may or may not have been using them for the same powder as the questioner will be, and may or may not be a skilled operator. Generally, anyone can throw ball powders satisfactorily with any measure, and no one can with coarse stick powders. The advantage that one measure may have over another depends on what your use will be, and in part the skill of the operator. I suppose that I should add that I have heard nothing but good about the Lee measure, and am curious about the new one.

Apart from the quality of construction here are a couple points that justify my spending the money for a harrells.

Firstly , with a given powder charge i can now take the powder measure with me wherever i go and provided the humidity etc is relatively close , repeat those charges (based on click values) with a certain degree of accuracy without having to use a scale.. Ive not ever had repeatability in that area with any other measure.

Do i use my harrells to drop and trickle for other rifles? Yes i do and i agree that the measure is not needed for those applications.

When i put my harrells in the shooting box i dont care if the measures settings get disrupted because when i setup i can return the cavity to say 60 clicks and guess where the charge will be? Exactly where it was before it got disturbed.. Try that with any other measure not using clicks.

Like others have said, I feel the lee will work as good as any. I use a Harrells for benchrest because it repeats well and fast, with the lee it's harder to make small adjustments repeatable.
