Powder for 7mag

No I just bought it a month ago
i see well BARs arent especially known for there accuracy. There have been exceptions but dont expect bolt action accuracy out of them in general. For alot of them 1 1/2 or so is about it. Ive got one in 7mm Im gonna start working with soon. I wont expect 1" out of it.

I have had good results with Retumbo and 180 VLDs or hybrids 26" Benchmark barrel 3025 fps. wish I still had that barrel, group was shot at 543 yards the 5 shot group in purple was at 600 off a wobbly bench the water line was impressive not bad for a hunting rifle.

68.5 of R26 and 168 Berger Classic Hunter Hybrids does about 3000fps out of my 24" Tikka T3x Lite...

I have found BAR's to be very accurate after finding what they like. My current 7 MM Mag BAR loves 140 TTSX bullets with RL22. 1/2"MOA. My BAT-actioned 7 MM Mag likes the same load over all others tried with Retumbo, H1000, H4831 and all the other "A-List powders". Mind you - this in respect to the most accurate load - not the absolute highest velocity. Most of the loading manuals list powders based on best combo of fill capacity and velocity and I think most of us start off with those suggestions and really never wander off too far from the normal manual loads and never really find the best for accuracy. RL22 has been the most accurate in the 7mm Mags I have tried it in. Seems to be the ideal powder unless you are looking for the absolute in velocity/temp stability.

We have had a number of BAR's in 7 mag in our immediate family, several have the BOSS on them. We also have a few 30/06 and 270's also.

They have proved to be very accurate if you keep the copper out of the barrel and de copper every 20 rounds or so. Montana Extreme copper killer and their copper cream work very well.

We shoot 140g ballistic tips on power lines with 65-65.5g of IMR 4350, Rem case, with Rem 9 1/2, same load for a 140g partitions when shooting is close. The only time we have had an explosion or two is when deer are within 15-20 yards of us, and we are lung shooters. Same load with Hornady 139g flat base has never failed.

ackleyman do you have to do anything special when sizing for the 7mag BARs ? like use a small base die. some people report alot of jams with handloads in them, some dont have problems. I have some imr4064. I think ill try

Hoz, I use a standard RCBS full length sizer. I NEVER shoot range pick up brass. I start off with 100 cases per rifle in a case guard 100 with the handle removed. Dad started shooting a BAR 7 Mag in 1968, and he never shot a factory shell in it, as I reloaded for him.

I have a load with IMR 4064 with 140g, for use in the Rem bolt guns. How reliable the load is in a BAR, I have no idea, but the IMR 4350 is a much better powder. IMR 4064 is very fast for a 7 Mag, AND you absolutely have to use a magnum primer or you will get hang fires with IMR 4064 using 140g due to the lack of powder density. PM me and I will give you that load.

I had to go with a small base die in my 7 BAR. My reloads would chamber and I would pull the trigger, but the firing pin never hit the primer. It only happened with my reloads. New brass was fine. So now I have the sb dies I hope like hell that was the problem. Haven’t been able to go shoot to find out yet. Is imr 4350 temperature stable?

Imr 4350 has been used since 1968 here in the South.

We have never had to use any small base sizers for any of our BARs in any caliber. We shoot Remington and Win brass dedicated to a particular rifle, starting off with new brass.

Brothers, cousins, and nephews use RCBS dies in 7 Mag.

Throw Federal brass in the trash in this caliber or look for issues.

thanks ackleyman its been awhile-- i have some imr 4350 so ill try that instead of 4064-- i was sizing some 7mag brass today but couldnt get the shoulder sized back to factory load size so ill see how it works next time i can get out.

i have a bump gauge so i can measure how much i push back the shoulder and today i could not get it pushed back to the dimension of a factory load even with die touching shell holder. id guess you arent getting the shoulders pushed back far enough on your brass and the bolt isnt really closing all the way so it isnt firing. will be interesting if sb dies work for you please report. i have a set of them to so will use them if i need. since by SAMMI 7mags are supposed to headspace on the belt they are notorious for stretching the shoulder alot more than a round that headapaces on datum. some manufacturers get sloppy with the base to datum dimension on them since they can.

how long did that brass last ackleyman-- thanks again.

My groups were garbage with rl23. Nothing under 2” from the 50 rounds so far. Speed was around 2850. I was hoping to get it to work as I have that powder. It’s impossible to get any of the above mentioned. Rl 22 and 25 are stable in temperatures. I won’t use them.
My 8 pounds of H1000 from powder Valley will be delivered tomorrow
