Powder dispenser choice. RCBS vs Hornady

Well I have decided I am going to buy a second powder dispenser. My RCBS is 15 plus years old and I want to try something newer. I have my sight set on the RCBS supreme and or the Hornady auto charge pro. Both seem to be decent and the prices on both seem reasonable. What one of the two would you choose?

What model is your RCBS? 15 years is a long time.

As a Short Range Benchrest Shooter, I am just the opposite of what most think they need in an automated charger.
All I want the thing IMG_2523.jpegto do is throw the charge to a specific weight. Everything else from round count to what ever is useless while at the range either testing, practicing, or at a match.

I use a Chargemaster Lite.

Lee,
I have two of rcbs’s original 1500’s I think I bought them in the 90’s they have thrown 1000’s of rounds they still work but haven’t used them in years then I bought two of I think range masters that was also years ago and never a issue. If the Hornaday dispenser is anything like the rest of there equipment I would stick with what you know works. There are much better as far as precision goes but your a long time shooter you know that. Your probably like me, throw light on the rcbs and trickle on a good scale.

You won't get much of an upgrade from what you already have unless you go with something like the Autotrickler V4...which would be a big upgrade. If you're going to spend the money, make it worth the spend.

I still have a Chargemaster 1500 combo with a few mods and I see NO reason to change.

Then I modify the straw mod to make things even better...

I cut out a smaller inlet hole... Then for stick powders I use about 75% of the smaller openinin +/-

For ball powder I turn the straw to only allow 25 % of the opening to intake the ball powder. And I castellated the straw mouth so it may drop 1 or 2 kernels at a time on the finial tricking. Once I got the programing where I wanted it, all I have to do is play with the straw intake opening according to powder size.

Castellated McDonald's straw...

Opening of the inlet of the straw.... ( I turn it to allow about 60 % +\- of this opening to show when using stick powders.

For ball powders... About 30 to 40 % of the inlet of the straw to ingest the ball powder not to overthrow any charges...

My Chargemaster is 21 years old. I found the recipe last night. My Chargemaster seems to have some squirrels living inside the unit. It’s been a good unit but it’s time for something newer. I’ve thrown thousands of charges with this old unit but it is no longer accurate. I am constantly checking my charge weights on my beam scales and at times my chart master can be off as much as 1.5 grains even after recalibration . I really started noticing this while shooting over a lab radar. Velocity was all over the place. The charrgmaster has been great but it’s time to replace it. 20 years is a long time for any electronic that has seen darn near daily use. As far as accuracy, for the shooting I do, the chargmsster is or was plenty accurate. This is why I’ve narrowed my choices down to the two units I am asking about. I don’t need a 1000$ unit. I just don’t.

soooooo.... you want to sell it?

I recently picked up a CM Supreme when the price dropped $80. I had other discounts so I walked out with it for $308 from Bass Pro. I wouldn't have gotten it for the $429 it was priced at for a long time. I mainly just wanted a back up for my CM lite. Nothing wrong with the lite for my purposes, but just wanted another sitting in a box in case anything went wrong. The first powder I tested it with in the Learn mode was Universal. That powder sometimes takes 30 seconds a charge on the CM lite, while H335 will take a few seconds. The Universal did a lot better on the Supreme after the Learn mode. I didn't time it, but my time staring at the dispenser tube with the funnel and case in my hand was much less. lol

A&D EJ54D2 and a dandy trickler! Continue to use the chargemaster to throw short. Trickle up on this scale. .003 of a grain vs .02 grain on auto trickler.
$425.00 to $450.00 currently.

Why not go ahead and get the magnetic force FX120i scale? It amazes me how many that will pull $600 as fast as they can out of their billfold for a Garmin chrono, but it hurts their soul to think about spending it on a quality scale.

I have the V4 and fx120. The resolution of the above scale is much greater. Thousandths to hundredths. And less expensive.

But does it have the magnetic force balance to be as trouble free as the fx120i?
I don’t see how at the price point.
Did you watch the video? It's not MF.
I have one on the way. Range scale. @Rocketvapor has a lot of experience with this scale, he may chime in. The sensitivity is 5 times greater than the FX120.

Ha,
Yes, I like the scale.
I use it on the over sensitive low range, with Auto Zero disabled.
If I have to tare, so be it. I want to know what the scale is thinking :).
I found that (using really good weights) that linearity is within a count (low range) when calibrated @ 10 Grams. You can pick your cal point.

Sometimes the scale will drift up a count, or down a count (0.005 grains).
And waiting for the scale to stabilize after adding 1,2,3 granules of fine ball powder (SB6.5) takes a few extra seconds. Gram mode is even a little more sensitive and I use it for comparing check standards to my reference standards.
If there are too many digits in the low range, try the high range.

For ALL good scales I suggest (Rocket Tip :) )
having good check weights to VERIFY performance NEAR your target weight.
BTW, No interference noted with Fluorescent lights, nearby ATT modem, cell phones.
I do not use a surface plate, line conditioner, or any special static gear.

Hope yours works out in the field.
Let us know what you think.

Instead of staring at it, I seat my bullet. Rarely do I have to wait on powder with either my Chargemaster or my Super Trickler.
