powder comparison

i am just wondering what your guys thoughts are on, the difference between Imr4064 and H4350 powder. advantages or disadvantages. plan on developing a load for my rifle ..... ruger 30-06, 22 inch barrel and nosler accubond 150 grain bullets. there is a ton of info out there but, this rifle has a short barrel and, i was thinking that maybe i could get the ahead of the learning curve and save some money. any thoughts ?

What cartridge?

My preference among "burn rate" charts is this one:

http://www.gsgroup.co.za/burnrates.html

- but keep in mind each chart you'll find will have reasons for changing the order among similar powders from different brands.

Both your choices have their advocates, both are popular in certain cartridges depending on what bullet's being used.

A general rule of thumb sees the slower propellant (H4350 in your case) used with larger case capacities and/or heavier bullets.

That's why we need more info: 22" barrel isn't enough to make a clear choice evident.

Another good source of propellant / cartridge / bullet combos can be found here:

http://data.hodgdon.com/main_menu.asp

- and as both the IMR and Hodgdon propellants are handled now by Hodgdon you'll find both listed for several cartridge / bullet combinations.

you did not mention the caliber, powders do work differently in different calibers. however, 4064 is a good bit faster than 4350, so with the 150 in a short bbl, i am thinking you are looking at a 308 or 7-08 but could be 270 or something else,

a lot of good results in the 7-08 and 308 have been with 4064/4895, the 4350 in my thought would be slower and need a longer bbl for best results. they are both good powders

I'd probably go with IMR 4064 then with the short barrel.

H4350 will work but with that bullet needs a compressed load for highest velocities at the maximum suggested load. In a short barrel it's likely to burn incompletely, leading to excessive powder fouling and large muzzle flash.

If you have access to some H414, try it with a mag primer. Velocity is normally better than 4350 & accuracy is good. A slightly dirtier powder but meters great.

I used IMR 4350 in my Ruger 30-06/ 22" barrel. With 150gr ballistic tips, federal match primer, I got very good hunting accuracy and 3010 fps average. It was deadly on deer. Also used IMR 4064 and Varget, both did well, but not as good as IMR4350.

4350, in my opinion, is a much better powder for the 30 06 than 4064 although both will work.

Most of my fellow shooters use IMR 4350 with outstanding results (accuracy) in the 30 06 especially with 165 grain bullets.

I'd try it first before any other.

4064 is outstanding in the 308 in my experience.
