powder choices for the 22-250

Working on a load for my Varmint Silhouette rifle. Using the 55 SBK (1-12" twist). Its looking pretty good with both 8208 and H380, with the 8208 about 50fps slower, but similar groups. Which one would be a bit easier in the barrel?

I had been using Varget and a buddy swears by H380. I tried CFE223 in my newest 22-250 and it loves it. Varget is still hard to find but CFE is showing up in lots of places and I have a bunch on the shelf so its CFE223 for me, at least for now.

Howdy !

What length barrel in on your rifle ?

My .22-250 shoots great with H380. It also meters very accurately through a measure. The only down-side is that it really leaves the barrel & cases a bit dirty - at least for me.

I have a new savage axis in 22-250 I started doing load developement for. Rifle is brand new and have put maybe 25 shots through it.
I started laser tests with cfe behind a 55g vmax. Not impressed so far but maybe barrel is not broken in yet. Doing .5 increments.
I have 8lbs of cfe and hoping I can also find a load with it for my 204.
I also heard good things about 8208 (can’t find any) and h380

It's interesting to see other peoples results with various products. I have a 22-250 stock Reminton 700 with a 14 twist 26" barrel that loves superformance and 60 gr fbsp Hornadys. It's a slower powder then the ones ya'll are using, could it be the length of the barrel?

While accrate in my 22-250 I get pressure signs 4gr under max listed loads with H-380. I use 4320 for most of my 22-250 stuff now

Mine has a 26" tube. Kind of leaning towards the 8208

OOoops - transmitted the previous incomplete response. Let me try, again....

Owned, loaded for, and shot a whole bunch of .22-250s. Also, helped w/ loads for my best friend's
Savage 112V 26" .220 Swift, and had knowledge of great load used in another friend's M-70 .225Win
Varminter. Beyond that..... I did a whole bunch of load refinement work w/ my custom " .22-35 Remington " wildcat shot from a 24" Hart SS 5-groove .224" cal barrel. All of the rifles were 24-26", and 1-14 twist.

I have had good success shooting high load density, and do so whenever great accuracy can be obtained while still shooting w/ safe pressures.

I initially used IMR4064 for .22-250 loads under 55gr varmint bullets, but did not enjoy the effort needed to cut-off powder kernels when using my old Belding & Mull guillotine-style powder measure. At the same time, I was reading everything I could put my hands on from experts like Homer Powley, Ackley, Ken Waters, Robert Hutton, Fred Huntington; et al.

Powley encouraged shooters/re-loaders to use high load density, and that got me considering slower burn rate powders ( for use in .22-250 example ). My load work w/ rifles like mentioned above showed me that
WW 760 ( H414 same stuff ) gave both great accuracy and safe pressures when shooting 55gr varmint bullets ( pretty much Hornady 55SX across the board ).

For example, in my 24" .22-35 rifle..... I was able to safely shoot 52gr benchrest bullets atop a completely full case of IMR4350 w/ safe pressure + killer accuracy; for target work. When shooting the 55SX which I prefer for use on " Soybeanus DIgestus ", best all-around performancd came when shooting 41.2gr WW760 and FED Large Magnum RIfle Match. Load density was in the low 90's, if I recall correctly.

IMHO - WW760 is a powder you should consider. And more recent entrants like Hybrid 100V and
Staball 6.5 could make for potential great potential choices. For the case capacity + barrel length you mention, I think that vel obtainable when shooting load using WW760 would run a bit higher than what you'd probably get when shooting loads using Hybrid 100V or Staball 6.5, but only by a small amount.
It is interesting that this happens to be a grouping on the powder " burn rate " spectrum that is occupied by
" ball " powders. The newer Hybrid 100V and Staball 6.5 powders are purported to be temp insensitive.
Load density when shooting 55gr varmint bullets over these 2 powders in a .22-250 would probably slightly
exceed that obtainable when using WW760.

While WW760 is not said to be temp insensitive, I experienced absolutley no temp sensitivity issues when using it an anti-groundhog applicaiton. I will add..... have not myself shot H100v or Staball 6.5 in cases of the capacity mentioned above, but still am convinced these would be great potential powders along w/ 760.
Would also like to mention.... the FED Large Rifle Magnum Match primer worked really well in conjunction w/ .22-250, .22-35Remington; and .220 Swift loads we settled on.

Best of luck in your endeavor !

357 mag----Thanks for the info. I do have a little bit of 760, so will also try that in my testing.

Appreciate it
