powder choice ?

Is varget that much preferred over reloader 15 for 69, 77, and 80 grain SMK bullets in 223 bolt gun ?
What are the different traits of these two powders ?

Ive never been able to get Varget to shoot in my .223 bolt guns. Re-15 and w748 are the powders I use for heavy bullets. 73 gr and up. N133 for light bullets, 70 gr and below.
Ive been shooting more w748 than anything else in my .223 bolt gun and AR, because its available.
Re-15 requires more frequent cleaning, like every 15 rounds. I will shoot up to 25 rounds of W748 before I clean.

I have to remember to take that advice! I have a bunch of 748. I need to try it!
Thanks!

Varget has been great with the 80gr VLDs for me.

I shoot a spacegun (28" barrel) in .223 and get the best performance using N-550 with molyed 75gr bullets (Hornady BTHP Match & A-Max); I get muzzle velocities of 2930 fps and that keeps the A-Max supersonic to 1000 yards. Reloder-15 gives me lower velocities, but it is much less expensive than N-550 so I use it for practice and shorter matches such as XTC. Varget is lower density than either RL-15 or N-550 so I couldn't get good velocities; I don't use compressed loads of Varget with naked bullets that some people like. RL-15 and N-550 are more temperature sensitive than Hodgdon; but I keep my loads somewhere near SAAMI-spec pressures and adjust with the seasons, so I have no problems with either. Folks who tip the powder jug until something breaks, then back off a few tenths of a grain are more prone to problems.

Shooters World S062 in a AR Match Rifle 26" Barrel with 75,80 & 80.5 is better than Varget .
Shot R-15 for Years in a AR Service Rifle in Matches Never Problem , with realistic Loads .

77gr powders I've had real good loads with.
Shooting 600y on F-MR, out here in high desert we shoot year round, temp swings of 40 degrees are common between 7am and noon. (We like winter the best, less wind).

N140, varget, h4895
Ar-comp, cfe-223, tac, Norma 203b, 2460

I learned that I'm most often beat be n140 and h4895. The double base powders like cfe-223, r-15, ar-comp are touted as temp stable, but nope. Well, not enough for a 600y match with a 40degree temp swing. Varget for me, but lot to lot variation gets me as I would only be able to find a pound here or there. This info is from my notes 2010-2013.

PP2000MR looks interesting, I may have to give that a try.

Also starting load development for .223 with a 69gr Sierra. At this stage, I would say start with a powder you can find. I was planning to start with CFE223 because I couldn't find anything else on my top five list. Then, today I stumbled upon some Varget. Change of plans for me.
