Powder Charge With Extended Bullet

I am wondering how my powder charge should change with increasing the bullet length.

For example, I am loading 140 grain Amax's in my 6.5-284. The Hornady manual shows H4831 should yield 2600 fps using 43.9 grains.

If I move the 140 Amax closer to the lands should I leave the charge the same or add a wee bit more powder? Common sense would tell me to leave the charge the same and work up from there but..............

Thanks,

Shawn

Load testing new rifle I begin with bullet touching lands and minimum powder charge, working up loads carefully and recording all my findings. When you start at the lands there's only one direction to go for accuracy improvement. To answer your question I suggest you reduce powder charge, and seat bullets to touch rifling.

I am never "at the lands". Bullet and press run out what it is, some will be on, some will be just off, and some will be just in. The difference between "just off" and "just in" could be significant in both accuracy and PSI.

I start my load development at least ten thou INTO the lands. When I go shorter, I go to ten off, then 20 off, ect.........I NEVER load to "just kiss the lands!!!

Just my .02,
Tod
