Powder Availability

I've been trying to purchase some H380, Varget, and Reloder 15 powder, but it has been "out of stock" at the more popular distributors like Midsouth, Sinclair, and Graf & Sons for some time now. What gives? :-\

It's been that way for a couple of years now. I have had better luck the last year finding powder and primers at the local gun and sporting goods stores. You can also try some of the less popular suppliers, they don't sell out as quickly. Try the gunbot searcher that locates powder and ammo in stock. Good luck.

Midsouth Shooters Supply has 8lb containers of H380 available and bullets.com had good pricing on 1lb containers of H380

Ammoseek.com is another good one.

And everything doesn't automatically show up on all of them. You have to search ALL of them sometimes...............

You need to broaden your search options!

Recob's (in Wisconsin) has 1#'ers of RL15, H380, even H4831sc (Brian they have BENCHMARK in 8's too!!) right now:

- but you better be quick as it'll disappear soon with the warm-up in the weather we're all expecting.

Recobs shows both Re15 and H380 in one pounders.

If you are in a place that Spee-Dee Delivery goes, they will ship with much less Hazmat fees too.

H380 (and most of the ball powders) is relatively easy to find, when it comes into stock it stays for days-weeks.

R15 is hard to find, and doesn't come in often.

Varget is nearly unobtainium (several pistol powders and AA1680 are harder to find), when it comes in to online sites it sells out in minutes at the more popular sites to a few short hours at less frequently scoured ones. I've seen Varget come into stock, and be out of stock at Powder Valley in less than 5 minutes.

The best way to find powders is check EVERY site you know of EVERY day around mid morning (for me, in MST), until you find what you need. I've been able to lay hands on everything I wanted except AA1680 this way.

If you're willing to pay $$$$ local stores with the most inflated prices often have the best inventory, though.

Some local stores are starting to have decent supplies again. And in some cases, with their prices, they'll have stock for awhile. Its certainly better now than it was a year ago, but not where we would want it yet. I just picked up a 8# of 8208 and couple 1#s of Rl-15 and IMR 4166 for testing. Powder is out there, just have to look around a bit.

Most all popular rifle powders are in good supply out my way. Only RL15 seems to be the powder that is still hit or miss. I'm even seeing 5 and 8# containers of the popular stuff like Varget, 4064 , and H335 . The popular pistol powders out my way are still a bit elusive as well.

I was at the Harrisburg gun show on Sunday afternoon and one vendor had an 8 pounder of Varget (still!). I asked the price and I think she said $209. She said Obummer raised a tariff (don't know if it was just for shooting supplies or anything overseas) so powder went up.
Does anybody know if this is true?

Powder Valley still charges the same (you won't buy it there unless you have no life, though). If it were a new tarrif, they would need to charge more. Obummer did create the market conditions where people are willing to pay more.

Now, a LGS that has to buy from an intermediate dealer may have to pay more for the product from that intermediate dealer. But the wholesale price doesn't seem to have changed. Not that that does us peasants any good.

FYI , all powder here went up 15% about 2 weeks ago even on existing store stock , Varget ( 2208 ) and 2206H ( H4895 ) is practically non existent here at the moment and the bl**dy stuff is made here.
I know of one dealer that has one 8lb jug of 2206H @ $405.00 AUD. I just maxed out the CCARD on 15 lbs of RL17 & 6 lbs of RL15.
And am thinking very seriously of an overdraft to buy more powder. Rumour has it that by the end of 2015 any powder will be very very scarce here.

Mike.
