Portable Shooting Bench

I got the U-shaped from Legacy a couple years ago with 4 adjustable legs,a little pricey(or I thought so when I bought it,but after laying out $1750 for and AMP Mark II and a $1000 for a Henderson trimmer it seems like a bargain now)but well made(really nice)and rock solid.I keep it assembled and use for cleaning, leveling optics, etc.

Honestly I think you'd be hard-pressed to build a nicer bench than this. I drive with mine upside down in the truck bed when I get to a dog town I slide it out of the truck bed and drag it by one of the legs upside down, like a sled, then flip it over and get busy.

I did put a finish on it I used boat varnish. And then I found out that I was too slick for my liking so I ended up putting a wet coat of boat varnish on the top and sprinkling it with sandblasting sand and that came out perfect

On the next one I would use a light colored sand not black sand because when it's 106° in the direct sunlight that black sand can get pretty hot.

I built two benches from one single sheet of 1 in plywood that I bought from Lowe's. And I had the kids there cut it into quarters for me so all I had to cut out was the notch. Then I attached the 1 in pieces to each other with liquid nails and drywall screws from the bottom. Then I attached the brackets using the hex head screws shown in the picture. All in all I was a very quick project and it produced two benches. My friend Troy has the other bench and he's left it out in the weather and never put a finish on it and it's still doing pretty good. I suggest that if you make one like mine using the 1-in flooring plywood to put a big thick coat of something on it to keep the water from seeping into the edges. But other than that it will still be around when they put you in the ground.

Do it right the first time around with Brad's brackets. I went to Habitat For Humanity, bought several solid core doors for $20 each. I use 4 lets. A big ole 300 lb. buffalo Heffer could do a lap dance on the shooting bench! The bench will out live me.

Cabinet shops sell 1.1/2" plywood, and one sheet will make two benches.

I can't stand a flimsy top shooting bench where every slight movement changes the cross hair.

I think I might consider on the next one to use electrical conduit instead of black pipe I think it would work just the same and it would probably cut out 20 lb

Are you talking EMT?

I recently sold my table I used for PD hunting. I only use a tripod now. Easier to setup & take down in less than a minute, easier to move from one location to another, easier to carry in my truck since it takes up less space.

I hunt PD alone. When the shooting starts, the PD's go down after 15 rounds or so. It's so easy to leave the truck and walk the fields and setup again. I also started moving around when the wind really picks up so I can shoot with the wind or into the wind.

The only time I shoot from a bench now is load development. Afterwards, switch back to the tripod for the fine tuning.

All of this has really worked out well for me.
