Polygonal rifling

Is there any advantage using polygonal rifling over standard rifling? Just wondering if there are any advantadges with polygonal? Thanks for the input.

Having had multiples of each I would say that neither one out shot the other but the polygonal barrels cleaned more easily. In theory the polygonal is a bit easier on bullets but who is to say that a conventional barrel with odd number of grooves is not the same. I would not seek one over the other - they are either good barrels or not.

Fellows in our shooting group had several polygonal bbls on their new Tubb rifles. Mostly in 6XC.

They shot well up until about 1200 rds and then strange pressure signs started to show up. They boys ended up backing their loads off 1 to 1.5 gr to keep from blowing primers. Same bullet, powder, and primers.

We couldn't figure it out. Once the bbls were toast, they never went the polygonal route again.

I doubt they're actually polygonal..
My T2K, with original Schneider in 6XC, was not polygonal even while claimed as such.
It was merely button rifling with lands similar to Broughtons, Lijas, or Pacnors(who also mistakenly claims to make polys).

But other than H&K I don't know of any barrel maker offerring true polygonals.

I have used the Shilen Ratchet rifled barrel for a wile now the reason is when I used a standard cut rifled barrel I was blowing bullets up and when I switched to the ratchet rifling it eliminated my problem. The only thing I think that helped my problem was the ratchet rifling did not cut such sharp angles into the jacket thus the jacket stayed together. My caliber of choice is the 6mm/284 with 8" twist shooting the heavy 6mm bullets
