With the seemingly endless demand for powder and (especially) primers, no matter the prices, it made me wonder how this community is contributing to that demand, or not.

How are you making purchasing decisions in this climate?

I just keep buying when I can find components. I really like certain projectiles and powders. Primers and cartridges are not a big deal to me. I have taken pictures of the load manuals on my phone. Then when in in a store and see a powder or a new bullet I look to see if it’s on my list. Right now I’m currently working up 3 new loads for me. I might not get the stuff I want, but I will get the stuff that works.

I'm kind of in the middle of a couple choices. I had/have a modest supply but, I did buy Varget and CCI 450's recently for my Dashers. Also, some other primers and alternative powders for the .223's & other stuff (so I wouldn't have to use the Varget/450's). Now, with a good supply, I believe I'm done buying for a couple years.

Not really a category that suits me. I have bought a bit for personal use for a couple of new cartridges that I have obtained and did not have optimum components for. I have bought for family that was OUT and had to bite the bullet.

Great sample size on the poll results, very interesting to see. Fairly even split between people buying and people not buying.

Barring some unexpected development I believe we are at the tail-end of this panic induced demand spike. Looking at 9mm ammo which was almost impossible to find at all for a while, then at ridiculous prices of 70 cents for 115gr fmj, it is now available for ~30 cents a round from multiple sources on ammoseek.

Another indicator is BCGs for AR-15s. There was a period of about 9 months where they were extremely difficult to find at all and when they were in stock it was at prices of $150 - $200 for vanilla BCGs. Now you can (again) buy toolcraft branded nitride BCGs at $70 each from PSA, similar to pre-panic prices. The PSA branded ones will probably be $50 or $60 in the not too distant future.

Same thing with stripped uppers which were almost impossible to find and this black friday I saw several advertised at $45 - $50.

Primers and powder are a lagging indicator for at least a couple of reasons. First, the number of producers is much lower, and the demand side of the consumer packaged reloading components is fairly small (compared to say the demand side of loaded ammunition). Since the supply side is not that large to begin with, any disruptions such as spikes in demand become more pronounced.

When we enter a panic cycle and buy everything we see we empty out the supply side of the equation very quickly. The producers ramp up to what they can with existing production lines but they are not going to build out new lines for a panic driven demand spike as they have seen this several times before. They, and the distributors and retailers take the opportunity to bask in this feast we create for them because they know it will be followed by a relative famine where the somewhat small demand side of the market (that is all of us) are finally filled to the brim with powders and primers to last us all two lifetimes.

In the not too distant future the demand side will subside and the increased production will start filling up shelves at the producers, distributors and retailers. When enough of us see CCI small pistol primer magnum primers in stock and think to ourselves 'what the heck would I do with another 5000 small pistol primer magnum primers?', and subsequently don't hit the buy button the retailers will have to resort to first removing limits, then reducing prices in order to move the stale inventory off the shelves.

Will Varget and BR4s ever be well stocked at every retailer? Probably not as they never were but I am fairly certain that the BS of $150/brick with a one brick limit will be gone. Perhaps $80 will be the new price for BR4s and $60 for regular primers but my wager is that by next black friday, and probably well before then, there will be deals offered on select components.

If I am wrong I will sadly stand corrected.

Remember what the "experts" in the industry were saying in early to mid 2020, this shortage will subside by mid to late 2021. My best guess is there will be no change in component availability through 2022.

Hmmm. It would be fun if we could create various 'pools' for dates that various components would be X price. For example, one pool would be for CCI 450's. Each player would choose a date and a price that CCI 450's would be on that day. The fun part would be to pay to join a pool, with the pool organizer taking, say, 10%.

Don't know about buying trends but would really like to see some analytics as to where ammo and components are going and volumes compared to pre-Covid times. I think the industry would serve us all well by publicizing as much of this type info as possible. What they are saying just doesn't really make sense, so info with a little more meat in it would be very beneficial, at least to me.

I'm looking for one particular powder from Allient, my LGS hasn't seen any powder shipment from them in the last 2 years. Assuming that it comes in some day, that will be my only purchase in almost 2 years, otherwise I have enough stock to last me at least one more year.

I might slightly overpay for some R26, but that’s about it. Like many others, I stocked up after the Obama driven shortage and am all set for the future. Now I only overpay for guns.

I have bought a few things recently that I was out of or nearly so but I work at a gun shop and get stuff at cost, the only thing is sometimes it is a long wait. I got 10 pounds of H4895 the other day that I back ordered months ago, actually I ordered an 8 lb. jug but could only get 1 lb. bottles so I took the full case. Price was up a little but not terribly so.

Certain percentage of all of the above for me. I bought a lot of stuff to stock up for when I retired, to cover the decreased income. I have enough stuff for about two barrels worth of shooting for each gun, lots of different powders, bullets, primers, some of that is also things acquired over 40 yrs too.. I will still buy some items when I see reasonable prices. There are some items that I just have to put up with gettin raped on, as that is the nature of those particularly oddball items. Just working on some bullets for one gun, no choice, has to be those, 125.00Cdn or so, for 50 of them, may take 6 mos to a year to get, too, working on getting 500 of them, it is the logistics that make them that price though. Freight is not cheap these days.

I buy when nobody wants it... I don't really need anything right now and I have changed what I am shooting to what I can get... For instance , instead of 9mm I went to a Glock 44 and now shoot .22lr since it mimics my Glock 19 carry gun and I finish up by shooting 10 rounds of 9mm at the end just to stay up with it.... That way a box lasts for awhile and I still stay sharp enough.... Also when COVID started I bought a new Beretta over/under and started reloading shotshell and shooting skeet...

Fell in love with skeet shooting and the people... It's expensive and now the notice of shot has gotten higher , enough to catch my attention... I have enough to load another 4-5 thousand so I am good for awhile since I do buy factory loads when I can find them at a decent price.... I actually loaded a box of pistol rounds on my Dillon for the first time since 2019... I had to remember how to use the dang thing lol.... I have plenty to get me by , not as much as some of you guys but I buy factory loads when I can find them and shoot them up , expensive , yes but I don't shoot up my reloading supplies during these times... Who knows these days when you might need them for SHTF....

You can get some good experience with .22 , you get to shoot and you get to learn wind reading skills also all for cheap and it beats not getting to shoot....I learned a long time ago with these shortages to simply change to something I can find and shoot it....Get out and shoot that old rifle or pistol you never shoot anymore if you can find ammo easy for it...

The difficult part would be to define "generally available" for the component in question.
