pointing bullets?

Here is the results of pointing some of the Sierra 'prototype' 155s that I've been testing. Rifle used is a palma prone rifle.

8-26-2008
Today I pointed the X2155F bullets with the Whidden Pointing Die. The point opening was closed about one half of the original size.

1000 yards ten shot groups.

X2155F not pointed the group was 14” by 16”, scoring a 98-5X.
X2155F pointed the group was 6” by 9” and scored a 100-8X. Nine of the shots were in 5”.
There was no difference in the elevation used on the sights.
This was a surprise to see that much improvement. Lane Buxton was pulling my target and he was at my house the next day pointing all of our X2155s.

I'm new to 1k shooting, and therefore need A LOT of practice. Do you guys think that bullet pointing should be done at a 'beginner' level? I'm thinking that my 'long range skills' are not developed enough to have to worry about something like this, but if it's tightening up groups at 1k, then maybe it would be worth taking that extra step when reloading.,Even though my skill may not benefit from it right away.)

I think this would benefit experienced shooters, who can already read wind and mirage very well. I'm not one of those guys, at least not yet.

What do you guys think?

I asked myself the same question before I decided to get the pointing die. For me, the best argument in favor of pointing bullets is that you end up with more uniform BCs and less vertical disperion in your groups or strings for the same point of aim. The minor improvement in BC is secondary although I'll take any advantage I can get. I need it. So if you are shooting at a round target, less vertical means that more of your rounds will hit in the widest part of each scoring ring. I still need to improve my wind doping, but if I point my bullets in addition to a bunch of other time-consuming boring things, I can be sure that it is the nut behind the gun if I don't hit what I aim at.

I was thinking the same thing - reduce as many mechanical variables as possible, that way you can only blame yourself!

Thanks for the reply TonyR.

Same here, also in 300 meters competition, one has to have as much confidence in the accuracy and shot to shot repeatability as possible. If you don't have that confidence you will always start to wonder whether it was the gun or your own technique to blame for a badly executed shot.
