Pointing Berger 184 Hybrids

Anyone have experience pointing these?

Looking for input on which insert to use, observed BC, and reduction in vertical spread.

I called Whidden's company and was told the 184s should use the "0" insert, but according to Litz, that only nets a 2% bc improvement, rather than 4% with the "1" insert. I was thinking if 2% all I'm getting, I may as well just sort by OAL instead of buying the Whidden setup to get uniformity. Looking to see if anyone has real world results that would make it worth while to start pointing these.

Thanks!

Just started load development with them in a new 280AI barrel. Bullets were pointed with a Whidden die. Attached pic is at 600 metres. Barrel is a 32 Brux, 8.5 twist, 4 groove. Less than 100 rounds through it (shots 44-59 are what you see here) Need to confirm jump distance, but a loaded round was showing good accuracy potential at 3.595 and 3.595 - suspect it's a jump between 10 and 20 thou running RL23 - powder charges at 55gr, 55.5gr and 56gr - speed difference was minimal, averaging 2793fps, 2804fps and 2832fps. SD is single digit for all three charges and ES ranging from low teens to single digit.

Shots 1-5 are 55gr, 6-10 are 55.5gr and 11-15 are 56gr - happy with the waterline of 55gr and 56gr whereas 55.5gr looks a bit more erratic despite the two pin holes. Primers used were CCI magnum but I have some CCI benchrest, regular 200's and Federal Gold match to try next.

I tested the 184s sorted by OAL to 1.572 then tipped up 15 to 1.576 with the hoover pointing die and shot then against a control group of 15 at 1000. The difference in average retained velocity at the target was 30FPS in favor of the tipped bullet this was an approximate increase of about 3.2% on the BC (2840 muzzle and 1680 vs 1650 at the target) . The effect of tipping is not dramatic, the vertical had a minor improvement as the group height was 5.6 inches and the un-tipped was 7.3 inches.

Ran a decent test on the weekend at 700 metres - shot both stages clean with 2 different loads - 55.3gr for the first and 56gr of RL23 for the second...I'm a little happier with the 56gr load - waterline was tight after the first couple of shots flew a bit high.

I was a devout pointer on my 180s. Ordered the insert for my Hoover before my 184s even arrived. Bullets showed up and made me realize I wasted money because they’re tight and beautiful. 184s are gorgeous compared to 180s and now I have time back in my life to focus on other aspects of my reloading.

This is an older thread and you might have moved on to another bullet by now, After running the 184's for as long as you did , and the way supplies are right now, would you recommend these instaright 284?

Yeah they’d be great. I would easily use them if I was out of 180s with no hesitation.

awesome. thanks for the reply and have enjoyed your vids and the recent live streams with Erik.
i am about to have a couple of 31" Kriegers 8.5 twist chambered with a reamer that has a .317 neck and .220 free bore. Should they do ok in this chamber? using 6.5x284 brass necked up also, is what it's looking like with brass at this point.

should have mentioned, I also have the option of a .321 neck and .220 free bore as well. these are two readily available options but open to reamer suggestions as well.

You didn't mention if you're turning or not. Turning go with the .317, not turning go with the .321 and as far as the freebore I'd say 220 is fine (it's what I used on all my 184s) but some guys go longer on the freebore out to .240 or .250. But honestly .220 should be ok since that's your only choice.
