point where it's no longer safe to set back a sporter contour barrel?

Is there a rule of thumb (or an absolute) on how far it is safe to set back a sporter contour barrel? It's chambered in .270 Win, so it's long-ish round.

There is about an inch left on the shank from where the shoulder meets the action to where the barrel begins to taper. What I wasn't sure about is if there is a rule about how much mass you want to be surrounding the chamber, like you don't want the end of the chamber to be too far into the taper of the barrel or something.

I've got a 284 barrel that has about 1/4" of free shank if that answers your question. My main 270 is a #2 contour & there is a lot of chamber in the barrel.
