POI Change

hopefully a quick question :-). On any given day at the range would you expect 1" POI change (verticle only...windage couldn't be better) at 200yrds? (this is all with hand loads)

The reason I ask is - I went to the range and shooting from a bipod and sand sack lying prone my POI was 1" lower at 200yrds. I had this happen once before with a different brand of scope and sent it away...they fully rebuilt it....the current scope is an NXS 5.5 - 22 X 56.

However in this case shooting from a bench and cranking elevation from 200yrds thru to 500yrds everything is fine....so maybe shooting prone can easily vary POI by 1" at 200yrds on any given day???

In terms of weather the two groups have been shot less than 1 month apart but at the same time of day so temp etc variances are minor.

I will go back up again and repeat the test, however I am interested in your experiences.

Thanks in advance.

That POI change is typical for the bi-pod vs bench/sandbag set-up. You will even get vertical POI changes with the sandbags placed at different positions along the stock......they may be subtle changes....but enough to take you out of the running in a match. For a real eye-opener, check POI between a lead-sled fired group and a sandbag rest fired group.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply - I probably should have clarified but the POI change was comparing bipod to bipod both on the ground. I definitely get a POI change between bipod on a bench and bipod on the ground....

I was wondering if holding the rifle subtly different when prone with a bipod could change the POI (lots to learn about technique) I just couldn't see that it would change in the verticle plane only....

Anyways I will pop back up over the next day or two and re-check things.

Thanks

A different day,, new POIs. yeah,,,that's the way it is for me,too. I think every set-up is different.
Once I do get set-up and rezeroed Im good to go and shoot decent groups,,,,,but then there are those days when everything seems a waste of time.........

i used to lean foward on bipod and pull back hard during shots, one match some targets I couldnt lean into bipod because surface wouldnt hold and I missed some smaller targets a extended ranges because I know I changed my poi, because of my hold. So now because I cant always lean i dont do that anymore, but I always have a hard hold to be consistent. (The hard hold for me is mainly so i can control recoil and watch impact). Million other reasons for poi change e.g. torque on actions screws etc...
