Plumb Bob and Wheeler Scope Levels

Dimner

I do believe in Captain Crunch.
I know this information is in the archived threads somewhere, but I'm having a hard time finding this answer. Or more accurately, having a hard time comprehending what I am reading.

For scope leveling, I have seen people post that they use the wheeler scope levels and then the plumb bob method. Isn't this just two different ways of scope leveling and using one after the other would negate the first method? Sometimes my spatial relations skills are very poor. I'm trying to wrap my head around this. The wheeler levels are used to align the scope level/perpendicular with the bore, and the plumb bob method aligns the reticle to the earth.

But if I use the wheeler levels and then a plumb bob, doesn't that then move the scope out of perpendicularity with the bore?

My brain hurts. All I want to do is level a scope so I get the correct movement when i dial in elevation and windage using turrets. Thank you!

I put the clamp on Wheeler barrel level on barrel. Place other level across rail/bottom scope ring half, or anything that represents the rifle being level. Then adjust the barrel level to match. The barrel level will remain as you install the scope. After scope is installed, you can align the reticle to a hanging plumb-bob line but the barrel level has to remain level while your doing this. You can turn rifle around backwards and shine a flashlight in objective end of scope to project the reticle image on the wall. With your plumb-bob hanging against the wall, you can align the two. High power scopes, you'll have to be on lowest power and turn the lights off to see a fine reticle. At the range, I'll hang plumb-bob off of a screw above target. While the barrel level is perfectly level, align your reticle to the plumb-bob string. Tighten ring screws evenly and re-check, may have to take a couple stabs at it. When everything is tightened down, run the elevation up the string and see if it tracks.

I actually use one of these to insure that the barrel and the scope tube and the level on top are in perfect level. Then match the barrel level to this devices level.

Thanks to both of you. I'll give these a go at the range on Sunday and let you know how it goes.
