Plinking Rifles

Plink, do I, YES. With every firearm I have at one time of another. Sometimes I just go out, roam around and take a shot at various object, that are safe to do so, as they pop or show up.
Every caliber I own gets some plinking time in from the little 17's all the way to the 375's.

Plinking refers to informal target shooting done for leisure, typically at non-standard targets such as tin cans, logs, bottles, balloons, fruits or any other man made or naturally occurring objects. The term is an onomatopoeia of the sharp, ringing sound (or "plink") that a projectile makes when hitting a metallic target such as a tin can or road sign plate.

road sign plate?

I have a 30-06 in a Enfield 1917 action with a after market barrel installed I have shot close to 2000 rounds so far just plinking, I purchased the rifle from an estate and it must have had many rounds on it when I bought it because it is now shot out. I have ordered a creition pre fit barrel for it and will install the barrel when I get it. My load for the old barrel was 50 gr. of imr 3031 with any 125 gr. bullet that I have. Where did you get the surplus 4895 powder?
Drags
GI Brass. Been a while back. Purchased 48 pound..

I enjoy this site with all the tack driving rifles but there is a need in most to plink. I live in a state with many abandoned mine sites & plenty of objects to shoot at various ranges. These areas are remote & a good place to chill out. One of my plinking rifles is a 700 Remington in 30-06 which I shoot on the cheap with 152 grain FMJ bullets pulled years ago by Talon Industries. I have a ton of CCI34 primers purchased when they were giving them away. The powder charge is 50 grains of surplus IMR4895 which has a burning rate closer to IMR4064, thrown with a RCBS measure. Fun, cheap shooting or I should say plinking which leaves a happy heart & a hugh smile. How about you guys?? Do you plink??

You’re more of a stud than me. I wouldn’t be plinking with a 06 lol

Wish I was a great he-man who could fire the great big-bores but I'm not. It's the Hogue stock. It has the aluminum frame & pillars which are great but the stock material & recoil pad are what takes the hurt away. I can do 30 to 40 rounds in a tee shirt without a bruise. I've shot the 06 since the age of 23 & now 50 years later I wouldn't be using it much without this stock. :):)

I've got a Turk Mauser truck gun in 30-06, that I load 125 Nosler BTs just so I could plink with it and it also has a Houge stock and it hurts. What you said tells me I need to find a load that will shoot a little lower on the ladder. Ya know what I mean, less powder!

Hate to hear that ebb. I'm shooting the 152 FMJ at 2700-2800 with no sting at all. Perhaps our stocks are different. Here's mine: Stock

The idea was to create a 250 yd rifle to hunt with, and with that range in mind the small light bullet going fast was thought to be one that would have little recoil, but i think i got the best accuracy at way more speed than the others that I was shooting with. Same stock just doesn't have the aluminum bedding piece in mine. I think if I come down the to a slower speed all will be good. Mine is green.

I don't plink as much as I'd like to. I shoot mostly F Class and when not doing that I'm doing load development off a bench or prone using my F Class gear. I really enjoy that but other than the wind reading skill development that comes with it, that style of shooting does little for the development of real world shooting skills used in hunting. A good friend argues that one must shoot in the style they will shoot when hunting to become proficient at the skill. He hunts in the woods and back country on foot and shoots off shooting sticks or bracing on a tree or just hand holding using his sling, whatever is necessary given the circumstance. Having shot high power where the first string of fire is hand held at 200 yards without the aid of a sling or any support, I agree with him. I suck at it. It takes a lot of practice to shoot off hand. I don't do New Years resolutions but if I did, one of them would be to do more plinking this year and develop other shooting skills.
