Playing in the wind at 100 and 200

These certainly will not set any records but I took a suggestion from another poster and decided to try some groups at 100 and 200 yards. Unfortunately today the wind decided it wanted to play also. As my buddy says somedays you get the bear and somedays the bear gets you. I only had 4 windflags, I could have used a couple more, it was all good fun though. For reference the 100 yard red dots are 1/2 inch, the 200 yard red dots are 1 inch

All Eley Match on the 100 yard, All except one group on the 200 was Eley Match, the bottom left group on the 200 was SK long Range Match but could tell through that the vertical on that ammo was not very good. The tuner was adjusted for the Eley, so don't take that as a slam on the SK. Next range trip I want to try a few different ammos at 200 after adjusting the tune at 50 or 100 and see what happens

Rifle was my Remington 40X, Sightron 8-32 scope, Burris rings, Sinclair heavy front rest rest with a DR Greenlaw top, Protector rear bag, Harrel tuner with the Pappas tube

@Knotwild - I could have never done this with a factory rifle. Best advice on a forum I ever got was on here when I was speculating on customizing a CZ or Bergara for ARA unlimited. Everyone told me to find a used custom, which I did. The price for that used 40X was less than a VuDoo or RimX and you can see how it shoots. My skill is "meh" the biggest challenge was just sitting there waiting for all of the flags to be pointed in the same direction at the same time. The guys with skill are the ones posting the 2300+ ARA unlimited scores. It is much harder to hit 25 shots in a row in the 100 ring than shoot 5 x 5 groups in my opinion

IME if you tune at 50 with the best lot you have shooting at 100 will be ammo dependent. this example of 50 shots from a rifle that hasn't had the tuner touched in over 8 years. shot with a CX lot that it never shot before. FYI, conditions were ideal at the time. a quarter is 0.955 in diameter I believe.
this other target shot with a factory barreled 1413 Anschutz the tuner was set 2 years before and never touched again. this was shot at the 100yds. matches we had. because of the wind that day we shot the same target for 3 relays. so that 0.186 group was done over a 21-minute time (7-minute relays) one shot for each relay.
so, what I am saying is if you have a tuner setting that can shoot really small and consistent at 50 there shouldn't be a need to retune for 100 it will be the ammo that will either shoot at 100 or not.

My thinking, which could be totally wrong by the way, is that the tune is for a certain velocity range for the barrel. Ammo of a higher or lower velocity would need the tuner moved slightly in or out to work optimally. I agree 100% that a tune at 50 should work at any range for the particular ammo it was tuned with

Just speculating of course and only beginning to learn this stuff so I am open to all other opinions. My only regret is that I wish I had gotten into rimfire more 20 years ago, it is totally addicting

I don’t shoot past 50 yds/mtrs but following some local F class guys have pondered whether the flat tipped slug becomes a liability at longer range.
It was, in large part, designed for ballistic stability issues at shorter range.

I shoot long range steel matches. I shoot 2 Bergara B14R's with a EC V2 tuner. I tuned at 50 yds, then went to 200yds. I fine adjusted at 200yds. moving the tuner 2 marks at a time in and out. Changing from my 50 yds tune by a few marks. You have a little vertical in some of your groups, it may come out if you fine tune. It worked for my guns

thanks, for the tip. I just played with the Burris inserts to give me 30 MOA, I think I may try 300 yards next good day, just for grins. However I think I like practicing at 100 the best of any yardage with the rimfire. I have taken my center fires out to 1000 but I prefer playing at 300 even with them. Minimizes the environmental effect and all

I put that target into OnTarget and the groups seem to mostly be around 1.5 inches vertical. Seven out of eight on group 1 came in at less than 3/4 of an inch, of course the 8th shot decided to take a road trip

Great shooting @ 400 BTW. I doubt I will go any farther than 300 because I still want to do most of my shooting at 50. I have an Arken scope with the Christmas tree reticle that I could probably get out to 400 if I get a wild hair some day

Just keep shooting and pushing out in yardage. A group of guys I shoot with, started from 50 yds to 225yds. When we made a berm at 285yds. Then to 330yds. and 400yds. now we are working on 425 yds. and 500yds.

Thanks Jim. I just got interested in .22lr last year and I haven't reached the stage of buying a custom, or even semi custom. I'm at the stage of being amazed at what the .22 is capable of at ranges I never thought of. I've been toying with shooting at 200yds to teach myself about the wind, and I guess I need some wind flags. The guns and I optics I use are run of the mill. If I can go 5 for 5 on a 4"x4" steel rotovator blade I'm ecstatic. So, I'm always amazed when I see results like you posted.

What's the name of your target scoring software. How is it used. Do you have to scan the targets?

I've been toying with shooting at 200yds to teach myself about the wind, and I guess I need some wind flags.

yep, I had 4 out. 3 Grahams and 1 driveway pole with a piece of pink plastic boundary tape attached. Next time I shoot at 200 I plan on putting out three more driveway poles. They work as good as my fancy ones for letting me know the direction and intensity. About $3 for each pole and another $4 for the tape, throw in an old phillips head to punch holes in rock hard clay and you have instant wind reading.

@ Webster. That is the Ontarget program. Targets can be scanned in on a scanner or you can take a picture of the target with your phone and upload it to your computer and input it. Small stuff I scan in but something like a 100 yard target I just hand on the garage wall and snap a picture.

The Canadian quarter is the same diameter as the American. Two "flyers" or errant rounds out of 50 at 100 yards. (The ammo was SK RM, so flyers are not unusual.)

I'd guess that is no tuner. That is a nice round group, that barrel and ammo are nicely matched in my opinion

one of the features of the Ontarget program is you can take several groups and overlay them. Here is that same target with all the groups overlayed on each other. Horizontals are pitiful but that was my crap wind reading not the rifle or ammo. I have a factory match coming up next Saturday that I need to practice for this week but I am going to play some more at 100 as soon as I can. Pretty sure I can get down below .5 consistently on a calm day. The CEP's are good with a 90% chance of .45 with this target shot in the wind

All fine shooting! Shooting a 22 in high winds will definitely hurt your feelings.

or if you are shooting at say 200 yards for the first time you may want to shoot when the wind is blowing just to observe how far the wind pushes the bullet to learn holdoffs

I just got back from a 50- yard practice session where I had spotty switching 10 - 12 mph winds. I purposely did not shoot in the calm conditions so I could practice my hold off when the tails were in various conditions. A couple of the shots were holding dead on the X just to see how far and where the POI would be to learn/reinforce where I should hold for that much wind. Anyone should be able to get a bull when the tails are straight down, it is nailing that X when the tails are straight out and fluttering and the arrows are pointing in various directions that I need practice on.
