Places to Prairie dog hunt Kansas/Colorado

Hello everyone. I am looking at making a trip to western Kansas or eastern Colorado the end of May for the first time. I was wondering if anyone could give me advice on a good public ground to hunt or if someone might have private land that 2 hunters could spend a weekend hunting? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Check with KB Style Adventures in Eads, CO. They have a website www.kbstyleadventures.com My son and I went for a one day prairie dog hunt summer before last and had a great time. The lodging was reasonable, and we got in plenty of shooting.

Igw,
Thanks for the info. I'll have to check them out.
I would prefer to go without a guide if possible but that may end up being the only opinion.

Pick an area. Then call the local farm store and make a friend with the guy there. He knows where the dogs are and can likely put you in touch with some good ranchers.

There has been so much mandatory poisoning of large Dog towns
in Kansas, to keep them from spreading to other land owners property,
that finding a good place to shoot may be difficult. LDS

good luck on western Ks. and eastern CO. have been going out there last 10 or so yrs...had many great dog towns... down to just a few because of the poison and plague... had one spot a section and a half...thats almost 1000 acres...three guys could shoot there several days and just move a little several times each day...went to spot spring of 2014 all gone!!!! The Plague... the owner didnt even know till I told him...Sad....Neil

I hunted Colorado many times as a resident and non-resident. Find a dogtown, ask and shoot. That was all it took to keep busy. Paying for A Prairie Dog Guide is like having a Stunt wiener on your honeymoon.
Public ground is shut down Jan-30 thru June-30 in Col. Private ground is open all year.

Season must have changed since you were there. Closed Mar. 1 to June 15th on public land and has been for a few years now in Colo. The SE section has been hit hard by the plague -- starting at the northern end of this section and moving south.

I've been going out for dogs since 2001. I've been with a group that used a guide a couple of times, but for the most part I've been with folks that had the time and expertise to locate private land and have good shoots. I've spent time in SD, KS, CO and MT. Things are much the same everywhere. What it comes down to in my mind is time or money. If you are coming from the east (and I do), you might not have all that much time to do the research and find a rancher that both has dogs and is willing to let you shoot. If you are going to drive 1500 miles or more one way to shoot dogs you don't want to spend all your vacation looking for dogs, but you might pay a guide and have time left over for next year's trip. Both ways will work. There's more than one way to shoot a dog.

Call the wildlife biologist in Western Kansas, He could probable direct you to some landowners.

In Colorado you can hunt Prairie dogs year round on private land provided the land owner will tell a game officer that he's trying to control or eradicate them. I've never seen an instance when this was not the case. A bunch of land owners, maybe most, want money to shoot dawgs on their land.

I just wish we could shoot PDs at Fort Carson but there's some sort of study on some species of owl that eats them or something like that. They're brave little critters here. Colonies right on ranges that get used every day.

There is not a lot of public land in Colorado east of I-25. A couple of National Grasslands and a few other patches. Private land is where the cattle ranchers are and they hate prairie dogs. Ask first and you may get lucky.SE has gotten a lot of plague the last few years but my buddy up north said the towns are still in good shape.

Ok. I'll go ahead and say what I believe several people are thinking (including yours truly)...

Finding a spot that's loaded with prairie dogs AND is owned by a friendly landowner is difficult at best. Government land is hit and miss at very best. Asking a PD shooter where to shoot poodles is like asking an avid bass fisherman where his secret honey hole is located: Aint happening.
