Pix of primer disks

No sweat. I have an Enfield, and what I had to do to get it to shoot has almost nothing to do with what was needed for my other rifles, factory and custom. Shooting old rifles can be fun, but I only feel the need every decade or so. The rest of the time they stay in the safe.

What do you guys think the disk is really for? Is it to keep the tool that puts it in place from sticking to the compound and possibly pulling it out, is it to keep the drying from forming big cracks that might cause a hang fire or other less than optimal performance or is it for some other reason?

The original design and intent was to help to prevent the intrusion of moisture. With more modern advancements and compound, it is nothing more than a way to keep the pellet in place during manufacturing and transportation.

The primer pellet is held in place inside the primer cup with lacquer or varnish. The paper disk soaks up the lacquer or varnish and bonds to the rear of the pellet.

And when you seat and preload the anvil with the cup contacting the bottom of the primer pocket, the "bonded" paper disk holds the primer pellet together.

JRS post above is 100% correct but after manufacture and transportation is "seating" the primer and holding everything together under seating and preload pressure. ;)

Take a deep breath.

1. The MagnetoSpeed will not clamp around the fore stock of a Enfield rifle.
2. I haven't reloaded or fired a Enfield rifle in over seven years.
3. BUT you do need to be more tolerant of everyone and their rifles in this forum "Reloading Forum (All Calibers)" ;)

You're late for the party ;D

JRS, they recovered cellulose material from these primer firing experiments, and I do not know for sure if it was from the paper disk or a binder in the primer pellet.

We need to get that rat bastard LRGoodger primer scientist to read the Army study in depth and report back to us.

The Godfather: Part III (1990)
Michael Corleone: "Just when I thought I was out... they pull me back in".

I'll have to research a bit on the cellulose biged.

Don't know how/if it even pertains to primers, however, I know it is used as a bulking agent for feces :o in humans and is referred to as "dietary fibre" ;D

I believe this answers the question about the cellulose biged:

Reading the study, one of the ingredients in the primer compound is lead styphnate. Styphnate contains cellulose.

JRS

I looked this up last night and the only paper (Cellulose) in the chemical formula for the primer pellet below is if you hit the print button. :D

"Lead styphnate, whose name is derived from styphnic acid, is an explosive used as a component in primer and detonator mixtures for less sensitive secondary explosives".

https://en.wikipedia.org/?title=Lead_styphnate

"BUT" nitrocellulose is in gun powder and they tested the primers with powder in one of the test setups. I skimmed over the material and I wasn't sure if the "Cellulose" they found was from the gun powder or the paper disk in the primer.

And it doesn't really matter because 99.999999% of the forum member reading this don't care as long as the primer goes bang.

The cellulose would be a part of the OH formula.

I agree it doesn't matter, but it is interesting ;) Add an h and drop the a ;D

Biged you are the smartest man I know.

Correction: Smart, good looking and modest...............with a sick warped sense of humor.

P.S. And I didn't believe a word you said.

"Oh" I didn't know that (bad humor)

And this is what happens when you have a retired electrical engineer and a retiree from the Nuclear Industry posting about primers.

The next thing we will end up talking about is the blue-red color shift as the paper disk exceeds the speed of light as it moves away from us.

Don't forget I tried to stay out of this primer debate............. ::)

And now some Don Rickles humor................

How many more Yo-Yos have any primer questions. ::)

Looks like Big Ed did a background check on us almost as thorough as the one they did on this retired electrical engineer before they let him in the nuclear plants. Next time I might think twice before I bait him into a debate. It was kinda like opening the door of the lion cage in a zoo where the chimps were squabbling too much over some insignificant bit of trivia, but doing that clears the air in a hurry! I had to do it.

Big Ed, my peace offering. I obviously went out on a limb. Are you gonna keep me stuck out there?

You wanted to monkey around with a new primer post and used a banana as bait, and you got what you deserved!
