But seems like the compromise includes the significant drawback of an underpowered long gun?
Same for me. I have the old P series Ruger P89 9mm and paired the PC9 with it years ago for the convenience of using the same mags in both.Sure.
Though, one can pair a sidearm with a rifle via changing one or the other to get the caliber of one's choice.
I've done 9mm: keeping my 9mm sidearm, then adding a Ruger PC9 9mm carbine. A heavy option, but it allowed me to keep the 9mm sidearm I was familiar with.
If have .357mag: have a powerful sidearm, then add a decent lever-action in .357mag. Also results in a fairly light package. A S&W Model 60 .357 or a Ruger SP-101 .357 with a Marlin 1894CP .357 lever-action would be a fairly lean-and-mean package, for a light-guns combo.
I've done .44mag: donning, say, a Ruger Redhawk or Super Redhawk and then adding a decent lever-action rifle. It'd be my preference if I need a harder-hitting bullet over greater distances, or heading into "bear" country.
Either route seems to work well.
