Pistol Bullets and Lead oxide

I have had lead pistol projectiles and round balls stored long enough to develop a lead oxide coating on the outside of them. I was wondering if there's an easy way to remove this coating? Would it be possible to tumble them in a tumbler with polishing media? What are your remedies?

Lead oxide is very toxic stuff. If it were me, I'd just shoot them as they are or toss them. I am sure they can be cleaned but then you risk a lot of exposure to PbO which is not a good idea.
