Pillar Suggestions

Going to try pillar bedding for the first time. I'm going to try it on an old Rem 788 with a wood stock. I've been looking at pillar kits and see a lot for Rem 700. Will these work for a 788 or is there a "generic" kit I need to look for? Any advise is appreciated.

If you look on ebay for rifle bedding pillars, you will find a seller that has all sorts, including cut to length stock. A thing or two concerning the rear action screw, the threaded extension that hangs down from the tang should not touch the bedding, and the rear action screw can bottom at the end of its threads on the end of it.

Hello,

I used the High-Score Deluxe Pillar Bedding kit that Midway USA sells and had great results with it. Although, I did use Devcon for the bedding compound instead of the compound that came with the kit.
If you want, give the "stress free bedding" by Richard Franklin article that is on this site a good read, it is full of good info.

Thanks for the help guys. I hope to find time to attempt it within the next week or two. I'll let you know How it goes.

I ended up just doing a regular bedding job without the pillars. The extended piece on the action that the rear action screw goes into on the 788 had me worried as far as the pillar goes, so I gave up on it. This was my first attempt at bedding of any kind so I didn't want to get in over my head. The bedding went well though. So if any of you are thinking about getting your feet wet, jump on in. There is lots of helpful info on this site and others.

I agree with Boyd on this one . The 788 rear screw is somewhat problematic with pillar bedding. The screw must carry the load and not bottom out giving a false torque reading. Also the extension the screw goes into must not bottom on the pillar. I counterbore the pillar to allow for clearance side to side and deep enough to avoid contact. During final fitting I take the screw and count the turns it takes to bottom it out in the extension out of the stock. Then install in stock and count the turns to determine if I"m loading the screw against the pillar or if it is bottoming out against the blind hole in the extension. Front screw must be given some similar consideration as it will bottom out on the barrel tenon. I am better at showing than telling but I do desire to help. I remember my first bedding job, so do my friends. RandyB.

I forgot to add, I am still fascinated with 788"s. It"s a love/hate relationship. RandyB.

RandyB,

I am also intrigued by the 788. The one I have was inherited from my uncle. It has the cheap birch stock and is chambered in 223. It has a four round straight feed magazine that is cheaply made and sloppy but is the smoothest feeding gun I have ever fired. It shoots 3/4 inch at 100 yards even though the bore is as rough as a snake hide.

I have been wanting to start some TLC on it for a few years now and decided to finally get started on it. Now that the stock is bedded I am looking at a Timney trigger for it. Shooting a 60gr Partition, hopefully my son will dispatch his first blacktail next year with it. I shot my first deer with it so that would be pretty cool.

Thanks to everyone for all the help.
