Pillar bedding

I have a question about pillar bedding an action. I understand that the pillars should be in good firm contact with the rifle action, but do the pillars also have to touch the bottom metal? Or is it good enough that they are firmly secured to the stock? If it makes any difference this will be a wood stock.
Jim.

If the pillars don't touch the bottom metal then the wood will give eventually and give you inconsistent screw presure and the main purpose of the pillars is to keep the screw tension consistent.

It's always best for there to be metal to metal contact between pillars, receiver and bottom metal. Stocks will compress, even fiberglass.
