Well, I'm older than dirt and the news isn't new, just not widely known. So here it is.I have a customer that specs step downs at specific lengths based on German artillary. Im up for just about anything.
Lay out three lengths from the muzzle to the start of the fast taper . Run maybe . .006 or.007 for the first section. .008 or.009 for the middle. And .009 or .010, even .012
for the last. Plot your groups before and after. You will be impressed. Works for prone and f class sticks. F class fat tubes need a bit more aggressive taper changes.
It's my hunch that the change interrupts the harmonics. At least, that's what I've seen many times over.
