(Pictures of)Almost a serious accident today...

Guys, Don't know if any one has had this happen or not. Today I decided I would change the scope on my wifes hunting rifle(.270) and take it hunting. Well I get the scope mounted and was going to reload some ammo for it, then I remembered that a friend of mine had given me a new box of Remington 150gr soft points (.270 cal).. Well I tell myself ; I'll use them then reload them.
So I loaded a round and fired, couple inches left and low. made some adjustments, shot again. needed an 1" or so both up and over, so i load another round and tell my hunting partner this should be it.. Well it was it. The darn thing blew up sending a small amount of powder and brass back into my face, good thing I am one that closes my other eye.
So now the bolt had to be opened using a small brass hammer. Upon the bolt coming out I see a bright ring about 3/16" all the way around the case just ahead of the face and it is black about a 1/2" up and the bolt is now black and it looks to be broken at the shell extractor... So I set the rifle off to the side and will look at it better tomorrow with a magnifier to check for any other defects caused from this off the shelf ammo.
Well any how I grabbed my trusty 25-06rem and me and my bud take to the woods, I see 3 small does and 1 small buck and a large bodied deer to far to determine whether it is a shooter or not. Also being that it was approaching dark too. So I let them walk. I get down and here comes my pard, so I asked him. "Well" what did you shoot? he says nothing, But I did see a big tannish colored cat with a tail about 2 1/2' to 3' long. i say why didn't you shoot. He tells me he wanted to shoot a deer. Darn What a Day..
Hopefully tomorrow want be this exciting, I could not take it...

Re: Almost a serious accident today...

Glad that you are safe. Do you typically wear eye protection?

Re: Almost a serious accident today...

I think remington deserves a phone call to alert them of the failure of their ammo. It will probably be another recall of another ammo lot for them. I personally feel better with my reloads.Thank God you survived.

Re: Almost a serious accident today...

This is why I forced myself into the habit of wearing ballistic glass ALL of the time. 8)

Re: Almost a serious accident today...

Thx Guys, when I get the chance, I will find the box and put a pic of it on here. Just in case some one else happens to have any of them. And normally I wear my glasses. I guess I better keep them on always now.
As 30EX says live to be old. And when I get a week day off when i can call Remington I will. But for today it's back to building a 16X16 Deck for the wifey. Then hunting this afternoon..

once again thx for all the comments and God Bless...

Re: Almost a serious accident today...

Hmm, while a call to Remington may be in order, I'd verify what is on the case head of expired round first.. Since you got the box of ammo from a friend, could be there was a cartridge of a different caliber in there. I have seen this before with the same result..

Re: Almost a serious accident today...

Whoa. Glad you are ok. Firearms and scopes can be replaced..........

Re: Almost a serious accident today...

Guys here's some pics of the brass in my first post. And this reply has a pic of the bolt.. And once again thx for all the comments and I viewed the recall, thx I will look and see if mine are from any of those.
I did check the box of ammo and they all had the same head stamp, so I guess it is just a new box of over loaded rounds. I will dis-assemble the rounds and see if any variance between any of them.

The vote is in, yep the # on the box matches one of the re-calls... I don't I care for any more ammo, unless I reload it myself though..Still will call them. Once again thx guys and please be careful...
