Pics of long range shoot in less then ideal conditions

Went shooting today in blistery cold weather. Winds were gusting like crazy.

Look at the snow getting blown around.

Set up in the back of the truck. went and placed a target randomly on facing hill.
brokeback007.jpg

Ranged it with my scope at approx 790 to 830 yards, i use the scope not a range finder) Almost couldn't see my hits, good thing you can hear them with steel target. The wind was blowing hard i had to move my windage from .5 mils right to a little over 2 mils, LOL, Depending on gusts. You can se a tree branch in from of the target wich was about 500 yards away. I hit the dam thing like 5 times, kept breaking bark off.

My truck is at the top left end of the flat.

I got about a one hit out of three, you can see my misses in the snow up top. Like i said it wasn't easy today.

Shooting at long and unknown ranges is the ultimate challenge for me. Your rifle and body position have to be pretty much perfect. If its not you cant range cuz your shaking, you cant see your hits cuz your rifle moves, expecially on a s**tty surface like a frozen truck bed, your parallax is all distorted, your neck hurts.

Then the ranging, a 12" target that measures .5 mils is 666 yards, .4 mils is 833 yards . So IMO a the smaller the target the tougher it is to range and to hit, obvious i guess.

So far you have fairly good data to go with but throw in the wind and things can turn ugly. You must be confident of your rifles accuracy, your reloading and your ranging. Like i said earlier if you cant see your hit your screwed.

I was dealing with 8 o'clock winds from 5,.7 mills)to 15 mph,2.1 mils) @ 800 yards, with gusts in between. I would get one hit, win condition being different at the target, then miss right.

It blows my mind when guys can get a cold bore hit first shot, it takes mad skills, especially when it must be done quickly. IMO the only solution is practice, practice, practice.. Compete, compete, compete.., and share knowledge.

Nice photos. Where is that? Looks too cold for me. I lived in Iowa for a while but have gotten used to Southern temperatures where I was raised here in Tennessee.

First the pictures were great. Such a great place to shoot.
I would like to read more about how the Scope has worked out? I read many good posts about this brand.

Well, the S&B is known for its clarity wich is great but i mostly like cuz its easy to use. The P4 in mils lets me range the targets within an acceptable limit. Mil reticle lines, mil height and doping adjusments only make sense. The exit pupil is pretty big on max power, parallax adjustment is great. The P4 is not a benchrest reticle though, lol. Its should have enough mil adjustments for any VLD bullet of any caliber untils its velocity becomes less than supersonic.

I LOVE It...

Not that's hard-core. Great Post.

Reminds me when I was living in Virginia and I went to an outdoor range about 90 minutes west of DC. It was about 30 degrees and snowflakes were flyin' and all the good 'ol boys were inside staying nice and warm. They thought I was crazy. but I had a new rifle and heck, just had to shoot it.

Most of what I have my equiptment is aimed for defending my home against the worthless gangbangers and dope dealers who have moved into the hood. Then there is the door kicker ins who rob people of anything they find.

So it's mostly 25 feet to 50 yards I must be dealing with. For low light and the night I have a EOTech 553 mounted on my AR15 if there is daylight I have my ACOG TA11-F sitting on it.

Never dreamed after after leaving the Military I would be doing the same stuff around my own home.

But I would like to build up a nice .308 for some long range target shooting. This is where I have read a lot about the S&B scopes.

I had a H&K91 but just the standard iron sights on it I sold it when I needed the money.

I went shooting today also BUT I only shot a 100yds in a heated barn. Beautiful pictures.

Good work moderator. Bill

This project first came about when going to the local retail gun shop just didn't do it for me anymore. I knew there was more out there, for the true rifle nut. So I started my education towards the high end rifle market by reading everything I could find on precision rifles and reloading for accuracy. I must say, the day I found 6mmbr, I was hooked, the wealth of information and knowledgeable ready to help out people on this site is amazing. I wanted world class accuracy from a rifle I could shoot anywhere. I wanted a rugged rifle I could tote around in the truck on spring gopher hunts, compete in sniper challenges, bring camping on weekends in the mountains, practice long range shooting in bad weather or shoot bug holes at the local range. With all this shooting planned out, barrel life was also important. Now, a tough decision needed to be done, do I go for a .308 or a 6mmbr? Well the answer was simple I got Clay Spencer to build two barrels in both calibers.

I chose Clay Spencer as my smith. His long range rifle accomplishments speak for themselves. After some great advice, we came up with the following components. Kelbly Grizzly II repeater RHRP with a remington type safety. It’s a great benchrest action and it can still take field work without binding up. McMillan A-5 Stock black molded with adjustable cheek piece and length of pull.
Why? Because I prefer prone shooting but also like the fact that it has a wide slopped forend for occasional bench work.

I also needed to come up with a solid reloading regimen. I had been reloading for seven years but I knew I still had lots to learn. Once again the 6mmbr site really helped me out. The Precision Reloading for Accuracy DVD from Richard Franklin was also a great help. Now I can proudly say that my average 5 shot group at 300 yards on a calm day is 1.3 inches and 1.9 inches on a windy day.

I am from Lethbridge, South West Alberta, Canada. On a yearly average, Lethbridge has 116 days with wind speed 25 mph or higher.

Southern Alberta in an Outdoorsman’s paradise. Here’s a picture I took at an Elk Hunt, last year.

Your research is really great what a great place to beable to shoot. I hope you keep posting more pictures and tell us more about your rifle Ammo.and the parts that make it work for you. WoW it sure looks cold there.

Yeah it does get cold, but we get what we call chinooks. The warm pacific air will blow in over the Rockies and melt all the snow. Sometimes in february, you can almost wear shorts.

One good think about cold weather is your barrel hardly gets warm, lol.
