picatiny vs. weaver

Howdy, can someone tell me the difference in picatiny and weaver bases? is one shorter or one wider? Thanks,Treeman

One thing that I ran into with some Picatiny rings that we tried to use on a Weaver base was that evidently the Picatiny bases have wider grooves. Some time ago we also ran into a problem trying to put Burris Z rings on a Picatiny base. The base was a bit too wide, something that would not have mattered if the part of the ring that clamped to the base was loose. What all of this comes down to is that some Weaver rings will work on Picatiny bases, depending on whether the clamp is loose, and some Picatiny rings might fit on Weaver bases if the cross bar that fits in the slot is not too wide.

The main difference is the extra cross slots which will allow you to mount the scope for perfect eye relief. Also the picatinny bases come in so many different styles now that you can have a custom base for elevation without shimming a one piece Weaver to get some moa out of it.
I have only used Leupold QRW and PRW Rings with EGW and Ferrell Bases as of late, with no ring mounting problems.

thanks for the replys, I guess the main thing I was wondering about is the width issue. if they are different widths if you use the wrong rings won't that put you off center? just wondering. Treeman

That's good reading! Now I know why the Weaver Rings seemed loose after I made my own slots, I only had a .187 end mill to work with.

The 45deg relief cut under the rail is deeper in the picatinny rail. The weaver rings work on the picatinny rail, but, the picatinny rings will ride a little high on a weaver rail. I would get a picatinny rail.
