I had a client that did under water photography in Monterey as well. She told me that you dont need to go very deep for unusual beautiful creatures.
Take a couple stripped motorcycle gears no one makes anymore and make them better than new with just a dremel... It's a 1985 Yamaha Maxim-X ( Inline-Four, 749cc, FIVE valves per cylinder, 100 HP due to Swabian arshole laws. Therefore in a very de-tuned state, yet the transmission had it's own hick ups)....
I undercut 1st 2nd 3rd and 5th gear. No different than a drag racing set up except the more power you give it the more locked the gears become. 1st and 5th share the same dogs that's why I didn't mention 5th gear. It's a gamble of thousands of inches. If there is more than 0.002" slack between the dogs and slots, the dog will break. I did it all with a dremel and model paint.
