Phoenix Low-Rider Kits?

MikeMcCasland

Team Texas F-T/R
Gents,

I picked up one of those low-rider kits for my phoenix recently, and installed it primarily to give me a few extra ounces of buffer room for matches where the gun is weighed.

I've yet to shoot it, but in playing around with it at home, the gun feels significantly more planted; hard to describe.

I'm curious to those TR shooters who have them installed, did it make much difference in the way the gun tracked under recoil, or the overall handling characteristics?

I searched for info on the topic, but there's not much out there.

I put one on mine and really like the way it tracks and handles.

Greetings,
Im using the Blake Machine kit. Installed mine a year ago. Less bounce. I'm of the "lower is better" mindset and my results show it.
Good gear!

I think under the new rules they’re illegal...:D:confused::eek:

The rifle identifies as 'division non-binary', despite being born F-T/R. Your rules don't apply here.

Seriously though, I just wanna know if it behaves any differently.

I've been playing around with video recording during matches, and happened to pick up another shooter in frame recently. Their gun is almost identical to mine, but watching her gun track was truly impressive (wasn't even using the magic carpet). It was the same stock, running a joypod, but it had a picatinny mount that extended from the front of the stock (right below the barrel). It looked to move the center-of-gravity much lower than my setup.

Obviously a major contributing factor to how well the gun tracked is their hold & how they've oriented themselves behind the rifle. It's unquestionably better than the way I'm doing it.

That said, I have to think some of that has to do with how the phoenix has the gun sitting way up in the air. I typically have a 'medium' hold on the rifle with both shoulder and cheek pressure, but in slow motion I can watch my gun torque side-to-side before the RAD compresses; it looks very similar to how a drag car's front wheels/body will torque at launch. The gun pitches up slightly, and the rocks side to side, before coming back into the shoulder.

I was hoping that by orienting the gun closer to the bipod (and closer to the ground), it would change some of the handling characteristics.

Mike I had one with the Blake lowering kit on it and it was nice got the rifle down a lot lower. If you can find a picatinny rail that can get it out in front a bit it may help with the way it tracks with the Xit..personally I would sell that stock and switch to a Manners..:D

Simple geometry , Mike . The wider the legs/feet , the more torque required to rotate the item in center position . Adding to the fact that you reduce the given height of the center-rotational pivot point , it has to transfer that motion somewhere . And that somewhere is to the rear , as the applied torque is being produced by the bullet coming down the barrel . If the force is restricted from going counter to the lands , or twists in the barrel , it will be applied rear-ward . I have a Duplin , and when I'm forced to lower the rifle , due to target set-up on the range , thus spreading the feet wider , and lowering the rifle , I see the same effect . Better Tracking , and that's on a Mouse Pad - LEGAL board . :D

So a piece of carpet glued down to a board used beneath a Bi-pod is ILLEAGAL in F-TR and F-Open class's?

I always like to follow the Rules when I shoot, I shoot in F-Open Class ( 6MM-BR).
My thought is, if you are not following the rules , it doesn't count!

Thanks.

Unsure if you're asking seriously, but I'll answer it as such.

So far as I'm aware, the only thing that's changed (currently) are the rules for the upcoming nationals. The implication being that those rules will be adopted by the NRA when they meet again sometime in the near future.

For now though, you can shoot off your magic carpet & ski-bipod in F-Open.

There's a 15 page thread about in the competition forum; it's a real shit-show, and a very entertaining read.

@D-4297 - That's the thing about these lowering kits. They lower the rifle to the bipod assembly, but in doing so forces you to raise/narrow the stance of the feet to achieve the same aiming point. Kinda hard to know of its a benefit or net-neutral; at least for my caveman brain.

I'll shoot it this weekend and report back. I've shot off a stock phoenix exclusively for 1.5 years, so pretty dialed in to how it used to work.

Stack more stuff under the bipod to raise it maybe in 1/4” to 1/2” increments.

I find the lowering kit more stable than the original top. The lack of cant can be problematic but easy resolved. Raising the bipod (thus narrowing the footprint) has not been an issue for me. The footprint remains wide enough to still be very steady and tracks well IMO.

Thanks Mike, I was asking seriously.

In looking at it from a totally theoretical stand-point , lowering the rifle into the bi-pod is a advantage , but if you're going to have to "raise" , adjust , the bipod Up to get on target , you've just narrowed the foot-print , and given away the "Counter-leverage" advantage . I'm definitely interested in hearing your findings .
