Peterson Brass question...

Like many of you, I decided to give Peterson 308 brass a try this season. I recently ordered and received my order of 308 Win, large primer brass (lot # W1TL0042) and I must say the brass looks absolutely beautiful.

Upon trying to prime the brass with my existing stock of Wolf LR primers, I experience a slight problem. Using my RCBS hand primer, I have to use an extraordinary amount of pressure (using both hands) to seat the primer. So much so, that it deforms the face of the primer. So I have decided to consult the many wise oracles on this forum to see if any have encountered this problem and what their solution was. My first thought was to swage the primer pocket, maybe just a little. I have a Ballistic Tools Primer Pocket Gauge and neither end will go into the primer pocket.

I did pull out my 1" micrometer to measure several samples from my stock of primers. The results are as follows:

Wolf LR primers: .2111"
Federal GMM: .2107"
CCI LR: .2114"
Rem 9 1/2: .2102"
Win LR: .2113"

Any assistance or wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Not trying to be a smart azz but why don't you contact Peterson? There maybe quality control issues or not. I would call them first. I'm like you though, I am going to try some of their brass. Waiting to see the responses...

I had a problem with tight primer pockets with 6.5 Creedmoor brass with LR Winchester primers. I use a bench mounted primer tool and had to really lean on the handle to seat the primer. I used a primer pocket uniformer to make the pocket square on the base of the primer pocket and that helped a lot. So yes they are tight.

Had a problem with some Small Rifle Primer 6.5 Creed brass. Talked to Ben Preston with Peterson and he said he would call me back, Never heard from him.

Yes the primer pocket are tight, but that is why it probable last so long in their tests. I've been humming and hawing if I should uniform the primer pocket for this reason. My K&M primer pocket uniformer won't even fit into the pocket. I'm shooting LRP brass.

They recently had a recall about an out-of-spec batch. Probably would pull up with the search feature.

I did search for that recall, it was for small primer pocketed 6.5 Creedmoor brass...but it was for the primer pocket being oversized...

My primer pocket uniformer doesn't fit either...

Been there, done that...I left a message at the number on the business card that was shipped with the brass...

Hmm, I got them on the first try when asking them about the 6.5cm pocket issues. Brass measured more consistent than Lapua and load test went very well.

I think I was the first person on the forum to question the tightness of their primer pockets on 6.5 SRP brass. They responded right away and had me send back the cases I had received that were too tight. A few days later they called me and said, "yes" the pockets were overly tight and said they had a machine that was out of adjustment. They replaced the brass with a new run brass and it was fine. I also have a bench mounted primer and it was all I could do to get the primers to seat. We all like tight pockets but, these were way out of whack.

I keep notes on everyone that calls in and i talk too. I am extremely sorry if i never got back with you. I can assure you that it was not on purpose. Please call me back or email me bpreston@petersoncartridge.com This really concerns me that i missed getting back with you..

Email sent.
Thanks Mr. Preston

Ben Preston got back in touch with me immediately and has been very generous in the resolution of this problem. I should have just called back and given him an opportunity to address my issue.

I obviously caught him at a bad time and he simply was so busy that he forgot our conversation, happens in business.

I really do like the brass, it is very consistent, well prepped and packaged.

I apologize for not just calling back and for airing my complaint on a public forum when another phone call likely would have resolved my issue.

I am using a Lyman tool so maybe that is the answer if you don't feel like sending them back for replacements. When I first ordered Peterson brass I had a cracked neck on two pieces of 6.5 creedmoor brass and told them about it and they asked for a picture of it. So I sent them a picture of the split neck. Then he wanted the brass to look at. So I sent him the brass. He said the machine folded it and that's what made the split. Anyway, he sent me a whole box of brass. I did not care if he even sent one piece for the one I sent him. I just wanted to tell them about it because he was just getting started in the brass business and I never saw that happen in new brass. Good Guy!

Peterson Cartridge Company is by far the best brass mfg out there. They only need time to build there cartridge line up that they market. It takes time and $$$ to develop a new die set for a specific caliber. There is no place to go to learn how to do this. Lapua, Hornady, Winchester, you name it will not tell you how to do it, or the tricks and intricacy's of making a specific caliber. Given time they will become a very house hold name with reloaders. I am very fortunate to know Derek and be able to talk to him on a regular basis. I can say you will not meet a nicer Family then the Peterson's. Derek and His Father Terry are very caring, and considerate people. They care about their product and take extreme pride in what they produce. Derek is very creative and is making and trying new dies, lubes, you name it to get the best quality product you can purchase. Keep a eye on them as I know they are gonna be in the top three.
