Personal shooting range

I spent part of the day Friday setting up my personal shooting range. I have markers at 100, 150, 200, 300, 600 and 1000 yards... for now I'm going to use a couple t-posts and attach a sacrificial piece of OSB for a back board... hope to try it out tomorrow... shooting buddy has his new 22-250 to play with it...

what works best for making your own back stop?

Thanks for the input... we lease out the ground to run cattle on for part of the year so im thinking portable for sites that would turn into scratching posts... plan on some steel plates/gongs for protected locations...

I have property in steep rugged country, with very little for neighbors, if you run cattle then you know they can, will , and do destroy any and everything they possibly can so if your gonna make a backstop/scratching post it better be well planted which of course isn't portable. I leave my gongs and just set them back up when cattle knock them over, the targets I make portable and try to keep them out of range when cattle are in there or they get destroyed everytime! dirt works gret if you have any, I have little dirt and a lot of rim rocks which doubles as targets with some orange paint, and the cows cant tear them up!
Wayne.

i take pvc pipe and bury it in the ground then i make my target stand with legs to fit the pipe, i carry the stand out, put the legs in the pipe and shoot, when through take the stand home.
i find 3" will hold 2x4 if you round the corners of the 2x4 or 4 " without that being done.
keep the top of the pipe about 1/2" above ground level to keep dirt out.

You got that right, I don't even expect the t-posts will survive for too long, so I planted 1" pipe in the ground at each one. My two short range stations are protected so I can build something there... A couple others are in fence lines so they may stay pretty well... the six and 1000 had to be placed in the open where I had enough change in elevation to feel safe shooting them. they will have to be moveable when the cows come home.. lol.. actually thinking trailer or sled based. The two close range shots are virtually level with bench site. 1000yd shot is roughly 30' lower in elevation. (don't have my survey notes with me)....

What do you use for gongs? thickness? I'm sure friends and family will use the range so calibers will vary. I will be shooting a 6 Dasher mostly, but also know 257 Weatherby, 7mm Mag and 300 Weatherby Mag could take aim also. What I build for the 600 and 1000yd shots will probably be off limits to the heavier calibers...

Landscape/Railroad ties, with sand back stop is great, also can use a piece of steel at a steep angle, but you would need to check the angle because I am not certain for that caliber.

Instead of osb or plywood, we have gone to styrofoam and or blueboard or any similar insulator material to hang our targets on. It works much better and last a lot longer. Barlow

Without pictures it didn`t happen........
is this directed at me? if so... I could post pics of pipe in the ground and the t post markers, but that doesnt seem to exciting... I can post up some pics when i get some targets shot... just got my new Sighteon 10-50x60 today...

another benefit is that our little praire dog town is about 850 yds out... so I could theoretically shoot (at- i make no claims to being good enough- yet) p-dogs from our deck... :)
