I’ve had a heck of a year with deer. Very fortunate to have multiple places to hunt. I wanted to go long range and see if I could kill one at 400+ yards. Well it happened this evening. I zeroed my Savage PTA precision target action yesterday at 392 yards. single shot left port left eject. 6 BR / 87 gr Vmax. Put one in this ones neck and DRT at 401 yards.

Terrific shot - wow - impressed. Even more impressive is the 87 Vmax. I've telling people for years about the effectiveness of the 85 grain Sierra BTHP in the 243 Win on eastern white tail deer. In my experience, if you place the shot slightly behind the shoulder broadside they will drop where they stand most of the time or just run a few yards and pile up.

I've shot a bunch of deer in my 50 year hunting career but never one further than 185 yards.

Thanks everyone. I put up that tripod specifically to make a long shot. It happened on the first hunt/ sit. Pretty low light as our sunset was 5:21 pm and sent the Vmax at 5:45 pm. There were 7 deer to choose from and I chose the broadside and biggest. As I walked out I heard a huge group of coyotes barking, howling and carrying on. I put out some deer guts and ribs late afternoon today. Will hunt those coyotes soon.

Congrats! Exciting for sure. I got my two longest this season as well. Been waiting for a few years to finally test all my practice out and boy did it pay off!! Congrats again
